LACK OF HIGHWAY CODE KNOWLEDGE IS PUTTING LIVES AT RISK

A poor understanding of The Highway Code is compromising road safety, a new survey has revealed.

Results from the poll of 5,000 motorists showed a large percentage failed to correctly answer a number of general knowledge and picture questions covering The Highway Code.

The survey, commissioned by leading tyre manufacturer Goodyear, showed that 54% of drivers did not know to stop when a traffic light shone its red and amber lights together. 48% of those surveyed also didn’t know that the typical stopping distance for a car driving at 50mph is 53 metres or 13 car lengths. Nearly a fifth thought they could get away with 36 metres.

When asked what the no-overtaking road sign meant, a worrying 23% got it wrong and over 75% assumed that the 30mph minimum speed sign actually indicated the maximum speed allowed. However, while the results showed many drivers were out of touch with the road rules, 95% are under the illusion that their understanding of The Highway Code is either adequate or good and over 40% don’t believe that drivers should be re-tested.

“Understanding the rules of The Highway Code can significantly reduce road accidents,” said Eddy Geerdink, Goodyear’s marketing director. “Our survey shows that a number of drivers would fail their driving test based on this knowledge and at worst it could put the lives of fellow drivers at risk if they wrongly interpreted them in real motoring situations.”

Goodyear announces the survey results as it welcomes back the Goodyear Blimp to the skies of Europe. The campaign, entitled ‘The Goodyear Safety Tour’, will tour 20 European countries to highlight the work of the tyre firm in improving road safety.

“At Goodyear, we firmly believe that safety is a shared responsibility,” continued Eddy. “Through this commitment we look forward to sharing the results of this survey with the UK population by using the Goodyear Blimp to underline the importance of road safety.”

THE GOODYEAR BLIMP TAKES TO THE SKIES TO PROMOTE ROAD SAFETY

Goodyear welcomes the return of its aerial safety ambassador as the global tyre giant starts its 2011 Goodyear Safety Tour.

The Goodyear Blimp, which has been absent from the skies for 12 years in Europe, will lead on a number of road safety initiatives as it flies across the UK throughout March and April.

Goodyear will launch its first safety initiative to show how a poor understanding of The Highway Code is compromising road safety. In a survey questioning 5,000 motorists, results showed that a large percentage failed to correctly answer a number of general knowledge and picture questions covering basic road rules.

These shocking statistics have highlighted the importance of road safety and Goodyear will raise the awareness of these pitfalls with the help of the Blimp.

The tyre firm will also produce a book of best practice, which will see Goodyear work with primary and secondary schools to see how they teach and practice road safety.

Goodyear’s UK marketing director Eddy Geerdink said: “We have a number of initiatives in place that will support our road safety campaigns and drive home the fact that people’s understanding of road safety needs to be improved.”

Over the last decade, Goodyear Blimps have been ‘on tour’ in the USA and China, but this tour marks the first European tour since 1999. Between March and October, the Goodyear Blimp will visit a total of 20 countries.

CONNECT PR FLIES AWAY WITH GOODYEAR'S BLIMP CAMPAIGN

Goodyear has appointed Connect PR to handle all UK media relations around the return of its famous brand icon, The Goodyear Blimp.

Connect PR has worked with Goodyear since January 2010 handling PR campaigns around products and safety. This latest appointment will see the agency turn its attention to the giant airship which will fly across the UK in March and April and then again in October 2011.

Absent from the UK for 12 years, the Midlands agency will take the lead in organising a number of consumer focused initiatives as the Blimp embarks on a European safety tour to promote road safety.

Connect PR will also host a number of press events in major UK cities to drive awareness of Goodyear’s ‘Safety Together’ brand campaign, aided throughout by the company’s world recognised airship.

Eddy Geerdink, Goodyear’s marketing director, said of the return of The Blimp: “This is a really exciting time for Goodyear. We are committed to increasing our brand awareness through the airship. The campaign will also see us working with Sky Sports who will use the Blimp as a camera platform, which will be integrated into a number of Premier League and international football fixtures.”

Hazel Crawford-Upton, managing director of Connect PR, said: “Working with Goodyear and promoting the arrival of the company’s brand icon is a real privilege for us and we are looking forward to delivering some fantastic PR driven results for Goodyear this year.”

MOTORISTS GETTING TO GRIPS WITH THE COLD WEATHER

With the onset of winter, motorists are switching to cold weather tyres to experience the benefits of these specialist tyres.

According to leading tyre specialist Goodyear, sales of cold weather tyres have increased by a massive 521 per cent following last year’s harshest winter for 30 years.

The news will be a welcome announcement for the secretary of state for Transport, Philip Hammond MP, who revealed that Britain’s resilience to cope with winter driving conditions would be better if people switched to cold weather tyres.

With weather conditions set to deteriorate even further over the coming months, Goodyear believes that the experience of last winter had already proved invaluable for drivers.

Kate Rock, PR support manager for Goodyear said: “Our European neighbours already understand the importance of fitting specialist cold weather tyres and the UK is now catching up.

“Safety conscious motorists are already converting and many more are considering the fitment of cold weather tyres. However, as more drivers become aware, tyre retailers need to stock up in order to meet demand.”

Goodyear is encouraging drivers to change their tyres urgently as most of the UK has already experienced the first fall of snow and with temperatures failing to reach 7°C. It also believes that a planned change is preferable than an impulse purchase.

UK AMONG THE 'SAFEST DRIVERS IN EU' ACCORDING TO MAJOR SURVEY

Drivers in the UK are the third safest drivers in Europe, according to a new poll by Goodyear Dunlop. Germans were voted the safest. 18% of the 3,500 drivers surveyed chose Germany when asked to nominate the country with the safest drivers in the EU, Sweden followed with 9% of the vote, and the UK came third with 6%.

The Germans and the British are also the most likely to nominate their own drivers as the safest in the EU (22% and 20%, respectively).

The UK drivers polled were more likely to require further knowledge about tyres and their role in road safety of any EU drivers surveyed. For example, seven in ten UK respondents (71%) said they would have trouble telling one type of tyre from another without assistance, 62% aren’t sure whether the tyres on their car are summer, winter or another type of tyre, and 42% know little or nothing about how different tyres can increase or decrease your grip on the road. However, the British are not alone – 75 per cent of all respondents said they would like to know more about tyres and their role in road safety.

Despite a number of specific differences depending on the country, the survey also showed some surprising consistency across Europe. After not drinking and driving, having correct tyres on the car came out as a key factor of road safety in every country, with 82% of respondents stating that ‘having tyres in good condition and properly inflated’ was ‘very important’ to their safety when driving.

Results indicate gaps in driver’s tyre knowledge and practice across Europe

Unfortunately, stating that tyres are important doesn’t necessarily mean that drivers have crucial knowledge about tyres. Or that they put this knowledge into practice. The survey results suggest that many drivers underestimate the link between tyre choice and road safety: one respondent in three admitted knowing ‘little or nothing’ of the way tyres will influence their stopping distance or impact their grip on the road. Only 39% said they were ‘very likely’ to find out which tyres have the best grip in winter conditions, 29% said the same for summer conditions. One in three EU drivers confirmed they change every year to winter tyres when it’s appropriate to do, but even of those who drive in cold, snow and ice conditions and claim to be aware of the importance of winter tyres, one in five admit they never switch.

That’s for tyre choice, how about tyre maintenance? 73% of EU respondents claim to know the appropriate tyre pressure for different driving conditions, but almost half of the people surveyed didn’t know when exactly to check tyre pressure (when the tyres are cold). And while 59% of respondents stated they regularly checked their tyre pressure, half of them admitted they might set out on a long journey without doing so. Similarly, 52% say they regularly check their tyres tread depth, but three in ten of them can’t even remember the last time they did. Moreover, more than one respondent in three admitted they continue to drive as normal on worn tyres, which tyre experts consider a major safety risk.

More ‘tyre awareness’ in order to improve road safety

“This survey on tyres & road safety reveals some of the worrying driving practices we all need to address to make our roads safer places,” said Tom Delforge, Director of Communications EMEA at Goodyear Dunlop. “It also shows a number of road safety risks that can be addressed by promoting the right tyre choice, building more awareness and encouraging better maintenance. At Goodyear Dunlop we believe that the right tyre for the right conditions in combination with the right driving behaviour can lead to a safer journey. Our survey shows three quarters of drivers would appreciate knowing more about tyres and their role in road safety, and we intend to accelerate our efforts to support this learning curve, together with all stakeholders”.

3,500 drivers were surveyed across Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain and the UK.

MOTORISTS WARNED TO TREAD CAREFULLY THIS WINTER

As the UK braces itself for more treacherous driving conditions this winter, motorists remain unsure whether or not to equip cold weather tyres.

According to research carried out by leading tyre manufacturer Goodyear, 71% said they would have trouble telling one type of tyre from another without assistance, 26% believe it’s safe to drive with summer tyres as long as the roads have less than 10cm of snow on them and 29% feel the sale of cold weather tyres is simply a marketing gimmick.

The survey amongst 500 drivers suggested that widely-held misunderstandings about tyres, particularly the role of cold weather tyres, still threatened road safety.

“Road Safety is a major concern, and the confusion surrounding cold weather tyres needs to be resolved in order to make motoring safer,” said James Bailey, corporate communications manager for Goodyear Dunlop.

“When nearly a third of drivers think it is OK to drive on snow with summer tyres if you’re careful, that’s a serious safety hazard. We have to increase people’s awareness, not just on winter tyres, but about how the right tyres for the right conditions can contribute to road safety generally.”

Goodyear’s award winning UltraGrip 7+ cold weather tyre delivers unparalleled control in hazardous winter conditions. Voted best cold weather tyre by weekly car magazine Auto Express, the tyre was tested and proven to stop six car lengths shorter than a conventional tyre on snow. The tyre was also a remarkable performer in the wet as well. In two tests that measured aquaplaning, the tyre dominated with a score 18% higher than a rival all-season tyre in the type of road conditions that the UK experiences every season.

CHIPPING NORTON ANNOUNCED AS THIRD LOCATION FOR GOODYEAR PETROL GIVEAWAY

Tyre giant announces ‘next stop Chipping Norton’ for its EfficientGrip fuel campaign

A nationwide campaign by tyre leader Goodyear to promote its environmentally friendly EfficientGrip tyres will come to Chipping Norton on Monday 15 November 2010.

Goodyear is teaming up with leading fuel brand Jet on London Road, Chipping Norton, to give motorists a £20 fill up on. The free £20 top up of unleaded or diesel fuel will be available from 7.30am to 9.30am and then again from 5pm to 7pm or until stocks run out.

The campaign launched at the beginning of November in Gateshead where over 700 motorists benefitted from £20 of free fuel. Since then, Goodyear has travelled to Horsham to give away free fuel.

Michelle Fisher, Goodyear’s brand manager, said: “The campaign is designed to educate motorists on the benefits of fitting EfficientGrip tyres to their car. They can save financially as well as helping the environment.

“Once fitted, our EfficientGrip tyres could be saving motorists as much as 1 litre of fuel in every tank – this is because the tyre uses a new generation of tread compound, which reduces the amount of energy needed to make the tyre roll. This lower rolling resistance causes a lower rate of fuel consumption, reducing the C02 emissions a car emits.”

Goodyear’s generosity does not end at the pump in Chipping Norton. A £10 Sainsbury’s fuel voucher will also be given to customers for every EfficientGrip tyre they purchase at a participating HiQ outlet in the region or via www.hiqonline.co.uk.

Along with improving fuel efficiency, the tyre offers high-mileage, good wet braking performance, resistance to aquaplaning and a noticeably quiet ride.

Chipping Norton is one of five petrol giveaway locations across England. The final station will be announced in the coming days with plenty of opportunity for people to benefit from the free fuel giveaway.

GOODYEAR WINS AUTO EXPRESS TYRE TEST

Goodyear UltraGrip 7+ is the top Winter choice, with a stopping distance six car lengths shorter than a conventional tyre on snow.

The Goodyear UltraGrip 7+ has been declared as the safest tyre for the coming winter after a thorough test by Auto Express, Britain’s biggest selling weekly car magazine.

With the dangers and the chaos of the last Winter still fresh in the UK public’s mind, Auto Express organized an independent test to establish the safest tyre to survive another harsh winter.

The magazine tested seven brands of tyre that were designed for cold-weather, comparing them against one conventional summer tyre. The testing took place on snow, on a frozen lake in Sweden and also on dry and wet roads at a test facility.

Six Car lengths Shorter Stopping Distance

The most dramatic test was an emergency braking situation on snow, measuring the time it took for the car to slow from a mere 25mph.

The Goodyear stopped over two metres shorter than other winter tyres and a staggering twenty five metres shorter than the brand new summer tyre that was tested. That equates to a difference of six car lengths.

Kim Adams, Chief Tester at Auto Express stated that the standard tyre was “still doing close to 20mph when the Goodyear had stopped. And we only started braking from 25mph”

Traction to keep Britain moving in Winter

Auto Express also measured the traction when accelerating, noting that the Goodyear gripped with a performance well ahead of its rivals. In fact, compared to the comparison conventional tyre it had over three times the grip. “It’s no wonder our roads grind to a standstill everytime it snows. Imagine the improvement if we all had three times the grip!” added Kim.

Goodyear UltraGrip 7+ Not just a snow specialist

The Goodyear UltraGrip 7+ was a remarkable performer in the wet as well. In two tests that measure aquaplaning , the tyre dominated the testing with a score 18% higher than a rival all-season tyre in the type of road conditions the UK experiences every season!

This is the 12th test win for the company’s cold weather tyres this year alone. The company has won tests in the major winter tyre markets such as Germany and Austria, before dominating this inaugural comprehensive tyre test in the UK.

The legislation regarding winter tyres is diverse across Europe with countries as geographically diverse as Sweden and Slovenia having legislation that enforces the fitment of winter tyres. No such law exists yet in the UK, but the Auto Express results make a compelling case for such legislation. To find the location of your nearest Goodyear winter tyre dealer, go to the dealer locator at Goodyear.co.uk.

GETTING TO GRIPS WITH BEACH SAFETY

Goodyear has announced it will become the official sponsor of the RNLI’s Beach Safety Roadshow this summer in a deal worth £50,000.

The partnership with the charity will see the global tyre giant, renowned for its safety and innovation, raise awareness on tyre maintenance and communicate key messages of safety to beach-goers across the UK.

The RNLI’s mobile beach safety roadshow will reach over 15,000 people during a planned summer schedule of events, which will educate families and young children about beach safety, including the importance of swimming at a lifeguarded beach, the meaning of beach safety flags and safety information for specific beach hazards and activities.

Michelle Fisher, Goodyear’s brand manager, said: “Safety is important, but it doesn’t mean that family days out to the beach have to be less fun. By working in partnership with the RNLI, we are aiming to provide beach-goers with all the safety advice they need to have a great day out that will be remembered for all the right reasons.

“We should also remind families to check that their tyres are in good condition before making a journey to the beach this summer. Driving long distances without checking the condition of your tyres can be dangerous. This is why drivers should be prepared by equipping their car with the right tyres and making sure their vehicle is in good working condition.”

Becky Higgin, RNLI corporate partnerships manager, said: “This news further extends our relationship with Goodyear as one of our key safety partners. To date, the firm has supported the charity with over £130,000.”

The RNLI advises beach-goers, particularly those planning to use the water, to choose a lifeguarded beach and swim between the red and yellow flags. The RNLI’s guide to beach safety, On The Beach, is packed full of top safety tips. It is available free-of-charge by emailing beachsafety@rnli.org.uk or calling 0800 328 0600.

Top fleet award for Goodyear

Goodyear has been awarded the coveted Environmental Award at the prestigious 2010 Fleet News Awards in London.

At the awards, held on Wednesday 17th March, judges praised the fuel saving qualities of Goodyear’s EfficientGrip tyre and recognised the successful green programmes introduced by the firm.

EfficientGrip received the accolade thanks to Goodyear’s FuelSaving Technology. As a result, the tyre benefits fleets by delivering important fuel savings while at the same time offering high mileage and excellent wet braking performance levels.

Lisa Faulkner, fleet manager for Goodyear, said: “We are delighted to win this award in recognition of the benefits delivered by EfficientGrip. This is something that fleet managers have been quick to realise by choosing a tyre that offers exceptional fuel efficiency without the need to compromise on safety. The award also underlines our company-wide commitment to the environment.”

Tests* by the respected independent testing organisation, TÜV SÜD, show that the new Goodyear EfficientGrip provides:

13% better rolling resistance
2% shorter braking distance on wet and dry roads
1.9% better fuel consumption

Additionally, extensive long-term tread wear tests conducted by TÜV SÜD show very positive results for the tyre’s mileage potential. A car equipped with the new Goodyear EfficientGrip can drive up to 49 per cent more miles with the EfficientGrip on the free axle and 8 per cent more miles with the EfficientGrip on the driven axle, which is another significant benefit for consumers and more friendly towards the environment.

Lisa said: “As prices at the pump continue to soar, there has never been a better time to look at ways to save fuel. Only this week, the AA has warned that soaring wholesale prices, an increase in duty on 1 April and the end of the subsidy for biofuel producers could push the cost of petrol close to 124p a litre just after Easter.”

On the night, Goodyear also celebrated finishing second in the Best Technical Innovation Award category for its OptiGrip tyre.

* Compared to the average performance of four leading competitors, tested by TÜV SÜD Automotive in March 2009; tyre size: 205/55R16; car: VW Golf; report Nr 76236753). Versus its predecessor (sizes: 195/65R15 and 205/55R16).
