Hard up motorists swerving into part worn tyre torment

Millions of motorists are risking serious accidents by driving around on part worn and second hand tyres, after defective tyres were blamed for 1,210 casualties on British roads last year.

With the slow recovery of the UK’s economy, the HiQ fast fit network can reveal that more 35 per cent of motorists are currently purchasing second hand or used tyres.

Figures from the Department for Transport show that 18 motorists were killed during 2010 from defective tyres, bringing the number of tyre related deaths on UK roads in the last five years to 164.

To coincide with the release of these figures, HiQ has commissioned its own research which reveals that millions of motorists are willingly putting themselves at risk by buying part worn, second hand tyres that are ‘unsafe’ and a ‘false economy.’

The survey found that over a third of motorists have bought used tyres with over 40% saying they did so to save money.

Almost half of those questioned said they didn’t consider the possible dangers involved with buying used tyres, despite many coming from written off cars and imported from Eastern European scrapyards.

Nearly a third of those surveyed did not know that part-worn tyres can actually suffer from severe structural damage which can’t be seen with the naked eye.

Nearly half of motorists were not aware that part worn tyres can also add two car lengths to a car’s stopping distance in the wet when travelling at just 50mph.

Furthermore, less than a third actually considered the false economy involved in buying used tyres, which typically don’t last as long and need replacing much sooner than new tyres.

The HiQ fast fit network said that while appreciating that times were hard, motorists were in fact paying five times more money for second hand tyres in the long run compared to a mid-range or budget new tyre.

A used tyre has typically 3 mm of tread left on it. As 1.6mm is the minimum legal tread depth, motorists are paying for just 1.4mm of useable tread compared to 6.4mm of useable tread from a new tyre that typically has 8mm of tread when new. HiQ’s message to motorists is to simply do the maths. Used tyres are a false economy.

Richard Edy, director of the NTDA (National Tyre Distributors Association) said that around 60 per cent of all part worns are imported from mainland Europe.

He said: “A used tyre working group for the Government states that there are three million used tyres sold on the UK roads each year, up from 2 million last year. Of that total, around 10 per cent of the total are part-worn tyres.

“Around 60 per cent of part worn tyres will originate from mainland Europe, with German imports figuring significantly.

“German motorists are far more responsible about replacing their tyres than motorists in the UK. The vast majority opt for winter tyres and won’t want to put their summer tyres back on their cars if they only boast around 4mm in tread depth.

“Many of those tyres then end up on our cars over here.” HiQ Retail Marketing

Manager Geraldine McGovern said: “In the vast majority of cases many part worn tyres are retailed illegally as they are not clearly marked as partworn at the point of sale. The main misconception is that they are simply ‘worn’ and everything else is OK. The truth is you never know where they are from.

“But the overriding message is that they are a false economy and extremely unsafe.

“We take tyre safety extremely seriously and if there is a small chance that a tyre might not perform as it should, then we could never recommend them, no
matter how cheap they are.

“We are offering free tyre safety checks at all of our centres and we are committed to providing the right tyre for each and every motorist, whatever their budget.

“We completely appreciated the financial constraints around many motorists’ pockets right now, but they can actually save money in the long term by purchasing new tyres at affordable prices instead of part worns.”

HiQ Academy delivers investment in 500 people

The HiQ fast fit network has bucked an industry trend in emphatic fashion, as over 500 bespoke training courses have been booked in the first half of the year alone.

The HiQ Training Academy is reinforcing its support for its franchisees and their staff, while reversing the results of a recent fast fit industry report, which observed a 12 per cent decrease in industry training over the past two years.

HiQ’s Academy provides a personal development plan for each employee, supporting them to develop their skills in technical competencies and customer facing skills.

The training programme is further evidence of the support provided through HiQ’s partnership-led franchise model and also operates independently as a separate NVQ training programme for tyre technicians.

HiQ Operations Manager, Farrell Dolan said: “We have never had so many business owners and technicians signed up for our Academy. We are delighted to be bucking a national industry trend.”

“The implementation of our franchise model has been supported with a detailed infrastructure that supports growth and rewards performance”.

“Our Academy is just one example of the continued support that we provide, and we are delighted that it is performing so well and meeting the needs of our franchisees.

HiQ announce half year results

The HiQ fast fit network has pinpointed its partnership led franchise structure as a major factor behind its ongoing success, after revealing its half year business results.

Year-on-year turnover like for like has risen by more than 7 per cent, while gross profit increased by a double digit figure for the same period.

In addition, the network’s 145 centres welcomed more than 8% additional customers.

HiQ’s retail director Juergen Titz said the impressive performance was testament to the living partnerships between HiQ and their network of franchisees.

He said: “The results are a welcome boost for everyone associated with HiQ, and represent a show of strength as we continue to perform very strongly in the market.

“These results continue to prove that our entrepreneurial approach, coupled with a franchise concept, is working well.”

Recent market data shows a flat tyre sell out market compared to 2009, while HiQ has increased its percentage of sales by more than 5 per cent. More of our customers are buying more tyres.

Juergen added: “We are seeing some noteworthy successes in the expansion of the network, and continue to support our business partners in a number of ways to help them achieve their goals.

“These half year business results tell us that we are succeeding in many ways, but we have another 6 months of work ahead and we must retain our focus.”

“We have a spirit and dynamism around everything we do, which is important. We have new partners on board and we will continue to aggressively expand the network in 2010 and beyond.

“Each franchisee must exploit the vast range of support that we have to offer through our create demand programme. Local heroes at each centre, coupled with our strong national retail brand, will make the difference.”

Business is booming for HiQ Lancaster after £75,000 investment

A Lancaster businessman who is boasting a 25 per cent increase in his monthly turnover has immediately revealed the secret of his success - a £75,000 refurbishment of his premises.

Pete Nevison, the owner of HiQ in Scotforth Road, recently completed a full rebrand of his centre and has seen the business go from strength to strength as a result.

The £75,000 investment has included a new depot, forecourt and reception.

Money has also been spent to provide customers with the latest automotive equipment available to reflect the company’s commitment to position themselves as leading competitors in the fast-fit industry.

Franchisee and owner of the Lancaster centre, Mr Nevison said: “It is great to see the business doing so well. A 25 per cent increase in turnover is more than we anticipated and is in part owed to the rebranding of the centre.

“The centre itself is now a modern, fully-equipped garage that reflects our dedication to serve our local customers whatever their reason for visiting.

“It has been a great development that now replicates the success of my other centres in Workington and Keswick.”

The good news in Lancaster has been replicated nationally for HiQ, which has boasted a series of impressive quarter one results.

Total gross profit for the opening quarter rose to 9.9 per cent compared to the same period in 2009.

Total tyre sales grew to 5.4 per cent while total footfall increased by 8.6 per cent in a set of impressive figures for the fast fit car care brand.

HiQ investing in further fast fit expertise with a Carr purchase

The HiQ network is celebrating a new addition to its team with the appointment of a new fast fit manager.

Stuart Carr has been unveiled as the network’s new fast fit manager and has been lured from IN’n’OUT Services Ltd, where he worked as an operations project manager for three years.

He will immediately begin increasing sales opportunities for franchisees in their servicing, mechanical, and repair offerings.

High on his agenda is the development of HiQ’s fleet servicing proposition while he will also assist franchisees with new industry products and machinery, while providing support with their centre layouts and design.

HiQ’s commercial manager Farrell Dolan said: “The appointment of Stuart is a major coup for us at HiQ.

“His role is a pivotal one and we’re delighted with his arrival. We recognise the importance of growing profit for every one of our franchisees.

“We believe that there is lots of potential to do this, particularly in franchisees’ ‘non-tyre activities’ which is why we have created this role.”

Stuart is a fully trained automotive technician, so is more than familiar with the fast fit industry. And in addition is a certified project manager, which is critical as new HiQ sites are developed and opened over the next two years.

He said: “This is a huge job and one that I am really looking forward to. I bring a lot of practical experience to the table that will assist in developing the HiQ strategy.

“The role will be concentrated around driving and setting the strategies for franchisees’ non tyre business.

“I have always been able to provide an effective link between centre managers and the executive team and I look forward to doing the same at HiQ.”

The announcement is further good news for the network, which recently announced its quarter one trading figures.

Total gross profit for the opening quarter rose to 9.9 per cent compared to the same period in 2009.

Total tyre sales grew to 5.4 per cent while total footfall increased by 8.6 per cent in a set of impressive figures for the fast fit car care brand.
