FUN AND FRUITY FUNDRAISER JUST HOURS AWAY

Tens of thousands of people will have their appetites well and truly whetted tomorrow (SUNDAY 31) when a fun and fruity world record attempt takes place in Cheshire.

HiQ, official sponsors of the motor racing series, are trying to raise as much money as possible for Breast Cancer Care and have come up with the idea of creating the world’s biggest ‘strawberry tea’ at Oulton Park race track.

Up to 35,000 people are expected to flock to the race circuit as the British Touring Car Championship comes to town and official sponsors HiQ want to create a mouth watering day to remember.

The idea is an extension of the already successful strawberry tea initiative that is hugely popular for Breast Cancer Care.

And the charity will declare the fundraising feast as the biggest ever seen in their history, as around £10,000 is expected to be raised.

HiQ’s marketing manager Geraldine McGovern urged as many people to get to Oulton Park to help the company in its bid to become the cream of the crop.

She said: “Breast Cancer Care inform us that this would be the biggest strawberry tea event that has ever been launched, and we believe it will be the world’s biggest.

“We will be ordering in thousands of pieces of fruit, so we want to hit the five figure mark for the charity as everyone purchases a bowl of strawberries and cream from us.”

Breast Cancer Care director of fundraising Murray Lindo said: “A Strawberry Tea can be whatever you want it to be – a picnic, afternoon tea, a cake sale or your work tea-break with a strawberry twist. HiQ have taken the idea to a whole new level and we are so grateful with their efforts for Oulton Park.
“What’s important is that it’s a chance for people to have fun and raise money to help people affected by breast cancer. This objective will certainly be achieved at Oulton Park and we hope that everyone has a sweet tooth and joins us for a tasty day of fun.”

COULD LYING LITIGANTS FACE A COSTLY REVENGE?

A decision handed down recently by the Employment Appeal Tribunal (EAT) could mean that claimants found to be telling lies may soon find themselves having to meet tribunal costs.

Tim Jones, head of Higgs & Sons’ employment team, says the findings could be good news for the region’s employers.

“The EAT handed down its decision in the case of Daleside Nursing Home v Matthew, in which the claimant alleged that her manager had called her names, which could have amounted to racial discrimination. The tribunal concluded that the claimant was lying but declined to make a costs order on the basis that she had a genuine belief in her claim and had not acted unreasonably.

“Now the EAT has said the tribunal should have come to the conclusion that the claimant had acted unreasonably in bringing and conducting the proceedings, and the tribunal was therefore wrong in law to reject the claim for costs on that basis.

“Costs are not often ordered but this case suggests that if the claimant is proven to be lying over allegations of discrimination then a costs order should be made - good news for any of the region’s employers who find themselves in tribunal facing a frivolous claim which they know has no merit.”

For more information about Higgs’ employment department contact Tim Jones on 01384 342100.

Higgs & Sons operates from three locations; Brierley Hill, Stourbridge and Kingswinford. The firm is one of the largest in the Black Country.

HiQ MAKES HARRY HAPPY WITH CHAMPAGNE MOMENT

Hundreds of British Touring Car Championship fans have given Harry Vaulkhard a big reason to be cheerful after voting him the winner of HiQ’s first champagne moment of 2009.

The Chevrolet Lacetti star received the most votes for his impressive all round display at Donnington Park, when he qualified in second place, and went on to secure 5th spot and 7th place in races one and three.

Harry received 40 per cent of the votes, narrowly beating Rob Collard (36 per cent) and James Thompson (21 per cent).

He will receive his bottle of bubbly from BTCC fan Kerry Earl, who was picked at random to present the prize. She will also receive a pair of tickets to a future race in the season.

She said: “I voted for Harry because to put his car 2nd on the grid and hold his own throughout all three races was an impressive achievement.

“When you consider how well he performed when battling with Jason Plato and Mat Jackson, you realize what a great effort it was.”

Harry was suitably pleased with his award and said he was enjoying regular tussles further up the grid this season.

“It is exciting times for me and the team. Everyone is working extremely hard and this HiQ champagne moment award is am lovely reminder of the results we achieved at Donington.

“We want to do better at Oulton and we hope that the bottle of bubbly will be a good omen for me and the team.”

HiQ is hoping that the popularity in its champagne moment accolades will continue after Oulton Park on Sunday.

AUTOGAS CONVERSIONS UP 36 PER CENT

The number of automotive LPG conversions carried out has increased dramatically as more people realise its cost and environmental benefits.

In 2008, 17,000 LPG conversions were carried out by LPGA Approved Installers – an increase of 36 per cent on 2007’s figures and the highest number of conversions in five years. The total number of LPG vehicles on the UK’s roads now stands at around 155,000.

Calor’s Autogas Development Executive, Chris Taylor, says the considerable increase is due to a range of factors, including cost savings to run an LPG vehicle, reduced payback periods and the desire to be more environmentally aware.

Commenting on the figures released today, he says: “LPG is by far the most widely available alternative fuel available in the UK. Motorists running LPG vehicles can expect to save up to 40 per cent on fuel costs1 and, in many cases, can recover the cost of a conversion in under two years2.

“The increase in conversions is good for business too as we’re seeing an increase in the number of installers seeking LPGA approval.”

Added benefits of running a vehicle on LPG can include up to 100 per cent exemption from the London Congestion Charge and increased residual vehicle values. The environmental benefits weigh up too as vehicles running on LPG produce far fewer harmful emissions that contribute to environmental and health problems than traditional road fuels. LPG vehicles produce 17% less carbon dioxide than petrol and 2% less than diesel, 120 per cent less NOx than petrol and staggering 2,000 per cent less than diesel and in terms of small particle emissions (PM10) one LPG vehicle will emit up to 120 times less than a diesel vehicle3.

Chris adds: “Given the rise in popularity of LPG, the number of refuelling sites is also increasing. There are now more than 1,400 public access sites with the majority of these on petrol forecourts.”

Autogas Limited, a joint venture between Calor and Shell, currently supplies around 220 outlets in the UK. A full list can be found at http://www.autogas.ltd.uk/. In addition, Calor supplies autogas from over 150 outlets through its Calor Centres, Morrisons supermarkets and other independent sites.

Chris concludes: “Although the number of miles per gallon achieved with LPG is slightly lower than petrol or diesel, the cost of refilling far outweighs any shortfall and there is no noticeable loss of power or performance.”

Calor and Autogas advise that conversions should always be carried out by an LPGA Approved Installer and, as there are around 200 outlets currently registered in the UK, it is easy to find your nearest specialist – a full list of Approved Installers can be found at http://www.autogas.ltd.uk/lpg-conversion/lpg-vehicle-conversion.htm

For further information on fuel supplies and bulk tank installation, contact Calor on 0800 216 659 or visit http://www.lpg-vehicles.co.uk/.

KIND HEARTED BUSINESS IN THE PINK

A kind hearted business man is getting in the pink after donating £2,500 to Breast Cancer Care.

Andy Bucknall HiQ franchisee for two HiQ centres, Burton-upon-Trent and Crewe, is showing his caring, sharing side after giving the cash to the charity on behalf of the fast fit centre.

HiQ has agreed to donate £2,500 direct to Breast Cancer Care in return for a day at the HiQ MSA British Touring Car Championship at Oulton Park race track on Sunday May 31.

Andy Bucknall and his team will be given VIP treatment, and will get the chance to invite customers and contacts to the day of racing in return for the kind hearted donation.

Dozens of fundraising activities will also be organized by HiQ throughout the year to coincide with the BTCC calendar, and fast fitters across the HiQ network will be encouraged to take part in as many events as possible to swell the coffers at Breast Cancer Care.

Andy Bucknall said the charity was the perfect fit for HiQ, as it reached out to a family audience – many of whom are wary of visiting fast fit centres, and are dissatisfied with the service given to them.

He said: “We are all extremely excited with our partnership with Breast Cancer Care and the opportunities that exist with the charity.

“We think the charity fits perfectly with what we are trying to achieve at HiQ. Not only is it close to all of our hearts, but no fast fit company reaches into the family market to help remove the intimidation associated with the fast fit sector.

The charity donation marks the start of a new era at HiQ Burton, after the centre was re-launched in March this year.

Andy Bucknall added: “We have conducted a great deal of research before opening the new store. Our research highlighted what the industry has suspected for a long time. On the whole customers find visiting a fast fit outlet to be a negative experience for several reasons.

“Centres are seen as dirty, unwelcoming and confusing; prices are unclear with quotes invariably increasing once a job has been carried out and customers feel they have no control over appointment times, waiting times and choice of product.

“HiQ is designed to place the customer at the heart of the experience utilizing the following features: Clearly signed forecourt and parking area; modern, clean, welcoming reception area; menu boards with all pricing clearly identified and information clearly displayed and written in non-confusing jargon free language.”

The Burton-upon-Trent and Crewe HiQ centres were purchased in March 2009 by South Cheshire Tyre & Exhaust Ltd, which specialises in all sections of the motor industry including service and MOT centres and tyre and exhaust centres.

CHESTER VOLKSWAGEN TECHNICIANS ACHIEVE TOP QUALIFICATION

Two technicians from a Chester car retailer are celebrating reaching the top of their profession.

Chris Dutton (30), from Blacon, and Dave Clarke (29), from Ewloe, have just gained their ‘advanced technical repairer’ qualifications – making them amongst the most qualified Volkswagen technicians in the country.

Both work at Dane Volkswagen on Sealand Road and after starting as apprentice technicians at 16 have progressed quickly through Volkswagen’s training programmes.

Delighted Chris said: “It’s really rewarding to know I have reached the top of my profession.

“It’s been a lot of hard work but both Dave and I have both been fully supported by Dane and couldn’t have got this far without them.”

Chris and Dave can now carry out the most complicated technical repair work on all Volkswagen vehicles and make the most difficult diagnoses. They will also mentor junior members of staff at the retailer.

Dave, who has worked for Dane Chester since he was 19, said: “I have loved my time working here and aimed to progress to an advanced technical repairer since joining; so I am really happy to have made it.

HIGGS ARGUE CASE AGAINST EQUALITY BILL

A leading Midlands law firm has joined the growing voice of dissent over the Government’s Equality Bill, declaring: “It may push many employers over the edge.”

The British Chambers of Commerce and Confederation of British Industry have both criticised Harriet Harman’s controversial legislation and now Higgs & Sons has voiced its concerns for businesses in the Midlands.

Tim Jones, head of Higgs’ employment department, said the bill could deepen an already entrenched culture of victimhood and may encourage claims of discrimination – at a time when businesses need all the help they can get in the credit crunch.

The Equality Bill, the draft text of which was published a fortnight ago, aims to strengthen protection, advance equality and simplify the law.

It will attempt to ensure everyone has a fair chance in life, promoting equality and fighting discrimination in all its forms, including age discrimination.

The Bill will promote fairness and equality of opportunity; tackle disadvantage and discrimination; and modernise and strengthen the law to make it fit for the challenges that our society faces today and in the future.

But Tim Jones said that in the current climate, the number of people applying for job vacancies are increasing and, candidates who feel they have missed out on a position through positive action are then much more likely to bring a claim against a prospective employer. He said: “The bill in reality has not been that much of a surprise for those who have followed the endless consultation over the past four years.

“However the proposals addressing positive action, gender pay reporting and hypothetical equal pay comparators are likely to cause more concern and risk for businesses in what are already difficult times.”

CORKILLS GIVES DISABLED MOTORISTS A BOOST

A Wigan car retailer is holding a special event to highlight a scheme which enables disabled drivers to use their government-funded mobility allowance to obtain a new car.

The Motability event – taking place at the Corkills Volkswagen in Wallgate on June 1st and 2nd – is aimed at promoting a better understanding of how people can benefit from the scheme.

One Motability customer who has been taking advantage of the Motability for over nine years is 68-year-old Arnold Stirzaker, from Chorley, who has just picked up his third Volkswagen Polo from Corkills.

Mr Stirzaker suffers from Parkinsons and has difficulty moving. “Motability has helped my wife Patricia and I keep our independence. If it wasn’t for the car we would have to rely on our children to take us shopping and visiting friends.

“The service at Corkills is always excellent; they make really helpful suggestions, such as by choosing a three door instead of a five and getting a slightly bigger engine to make driving easier.

“I’d recommend everyone who is eligible for the Motability scheme to go along to the event and see how it can benefit them.”

Anyone in receipt of the Higher Rate Mobility Component of Disability Living Allowance (DLA) or the War Pensioners Mobility Supplement is eligible for Motability.

Corkills’ brand manager Carl Hazelton added: “Motability is a great way for people with a disability to be mobile and have the freedom to travel.

Corkills has been running Motability events for five years and has expertly trained staffs who are able to offer advice on what cars are most suitable and any adjustments that need to be made.”

A Motability specialist will be at the event to offer advice on how people can use the scheme. There is no need to book.

AMTICO INTERNATIONAL SHOWS OFF ITS STYLE

When the time came for Leeds University to refurbish part of the flooring at its bustling city campus, they turned to inspirational flooring company Amtico International for a high quality solution.

Located in the heart of the vibrant city centre, Leeds University’s main campus is a mix of traditional architecture and contemporary buildings. With over 33,000 full time students, the university is one of the largest in the UK.

It was imperative that any new flooring was extremely durable to be able to withstand heavy and continual foot flow over a long period of time. But the product must also fit in with the tone of the buildings, being both appealing to students and reflecting the academic stature of the institution.

Kay Swithenbank, the interior designer at Leeds University, identified Amtico as a hard wearing and long lasting solution that could also be used to create striking looks.

“Amtico stands out and has an edge over its competitors because their products look so natural and not ‘plasticy’ like other ranges.

“Appearance retention and durability are also equally as important. Flooring at the university has to stand up to day-to-day wear caused by hundreds of people walking over it each day.

“We needed a product that could not only withstand this, but also still look good after some time.”

Working alongside Kay, Amtico International supplied and fitted a variety of products from their extensive collection to re-floor a large area of the campus.

A busy reception area was given an inviting, authentic and airy new look using Honed Limestone Natural from the Amtico Essential collection, whilst the stairs were brightened up with Fused Birch. To contrast with this light coloured wood, deep and sumptuous Rosewood was used in an adjacent café area to create a clearly marked out area that complemented the modern design of the surroundings.

A separate reception area was given a clean and contemporary facelift with Blonde Oak.

The final part of the project was flooring the new, tropical themed café Maia. Rosewood was again selected for this, for its warm, timeless look that added to the lush décor of the new space.

“We were absolutely thrilled with the results,” added Kay. “The new flooring looked fantastic and the service from Amtico was excellent.”

Amtico International has 40 years’ experience in designing, engineering and manufacturing some of the most innovative and resilient flooring products in the world. The company delivers flooring solutions to industry and business as well as domestic environments.

SMALL STEPS MAKE ALL THE DIFFERENCE

Baxi, the UK heating and renewables specialist, has called upon schools nationwide to help celebrate the launch of the Baxi EnergyHub Junior website.

Coinciding with National Walk to School week beginning 18th-22nd May 2009, 30 pupils have received a Baxi ‘Small Steps’ walking pack containing a pedometer, a uni Power Tank Eco pen and a four-week personal record sheet, that pupils will use to record the amount of steps taken to and from school.

With CO2, obesity and air pollution high on the school agenda, the resources will engage children and help raise awareness among families on the simplest of ways to save energy and decrease their carbon footprint.

By taking part in the campaign, pupils will be included into a national prize draw to win a family trip to the Eden Project and one school will win £400 active sport vouchers. There is also a chance to win an Eco Media Player by logging on to www.baxienergyhub.co.uk and becoming an EnergyHub Junior.

The Baxi EnergyHub website is an informative online resource packed with impartial advice and information about energy conservation. There is also an additional section that has been created especially for children. Baxi EnergyHub Juniors, introduced by four characters, will include ideas on how to save energy and CO2 emissions, fun downloads, competitions and information to guide and educate the younger generation.

HiQ GETTING FRUITY WITH A MOUTHWATERING CHARITY BONANZA

Up to 30,000 sweet toothed people are expected to break a world record when they take part in a day of strawberry eating at the HiQ British Touring Car Championship at Oulton Park.

HiQ, official sponsors of the motor racing series, are trying to raise as much money as possible for Breast Cancer Care and have come up with the idea of creating the biggest ‘strawberry tea’ event ever seen.

So it will be a case of strawberry fields forever at the Cheshire race circuit on May 31 when thousands of pieces of fruit are brought in for people to buy – with a splash of cream.

With around 30,000 spectators expected to flock to the venue to watch the racing, it is hoped that more than £10,000 is raised for the charity.

The idea is an extension of the already successful Strawberry Tea fundraising initiative that is hugely popular for Breast Cancer Care.

Breast Cancer Care’s Head of Community Fundraising, Alec Raven, said: “A Strawberry Tea can be whatever you want it to be – a picnic, afternoon tea, a cake sale or your work tea-break with a strawberry twist.

LOOK AFTER YOUR DIGITAL HYGIENE

As the wind blows in from Mexico and we wash our hands for the 100th time in a day, it could be said we are all now taking our personal hygiene much more seriously.

However for one Midlands-based digital marketing specialist, it’s the region’s businesses that should be thrusting their digital hygiene to the top of the agenda.

Mexican American Jose Espinosa is Connect Group’s Director of Digital Marketing. He’s been with the 120-strong marcomms specialist for the last two years and before this he’s spent the last 20 years actively contributing his digital marketing expertise to blue chip companies such as Ford Motor Company, National Semiconductor, Motorola and Sun Microsystems.

One myth that Jose is keen to dispel to businesses is that their only web presence is via their own company website. Utter rubbish says Jose. “Let’s face it. Digital marketing is now so much more than just having a website. Customers now expect to find the majority of information on a product or service online.”

According to Jose, what businesses need to realise is that above and beyond their own company’s website, it’s every other website globally that users visit either before or after the corporate site that people need to be keeping updated with the very latest and accurate information.

“It takes more than just SEO to shift your audience’s mindset,” says Jose. “You have to put your message in front of them at every point in the digital journey. This will include targeting social and crowd-sourced networks and ensuring the brand is heard and seen.
“Developing a sustainable audience is highly dependent on creating a conversation. Word of mouth is powerful – and can be done just as effectively online. My advice to businesses is don’t just tell your visitors how great your museums are; let them tell each other how great they are.”

Jose says that websites should not just be an information source. “Websites should be developed and managed with one thing in mind – conversions. Our job as digital specialists is to focus on converting visitors to your website into customers by ensuring that users are “sign posted” to the next logical step – be that making a purchase, signing up for a newsletter or downloading a brochure.”One important point is to create a post site visit communication strategy, which is a must for repeat visitors. Jose says: “Leverage what you know about your visitors to communicate to them with relevant information. Track users’ clickstream/preferences to send them targeted information – one newsletter does NOT fit all and you should create content for specific users to achieve the best results and return on investment.”

If businesses start talking to the digital world outside their own website, the opportunities are endless.

Since joining the Connect Group, Jose has been instrumental in setting up and managing the group’s digital marketing offering for clients including Jaguar Land Rover, Sustain, Triton and Tarmac. He enjoys technology in all its forms, but holds a special love for gadgets of all kinds and “futuristic” technology from the 1950s such as bubble televisions and valve amplifiers.

ARMED FORCES TO WRITE IN THE LINE OF FIRE

The British Armed Forces are being encouraged to reveal a loving, sensitive side to their rugged, brave exteriors.

Mitsubishi Pencil Co., owners of the uni-ball brand are asking our brave boys and girls, currently serving in Afghanistan and other parts of the world, to take up the challenge of posting hand-written love letters back home.

The company is attempting to resurrect the heart-warming tradition amongst troops by offering every soldier based at military bases throughout the UK an open invitation to apply for a free Power Tank pen.

For those about to embark on a tour of duty, Power Tank is the ideal writing instrument for use in the most unpredictable of environments and features uni Super Ink, a unique pigment ink with outstanding levels of protection.

Stuart Barker, Marketing Manager at Mitsubishi Pencil Co. said: “Our Power Tank can write clearly upside down, in freezing temperatures and on wet paper without blurring. Featuring a pressurised refill, which allows it to write in extreme conditions, it will be perfect for soldiers to take with them. We also want to encourage them to write a letter home to their families, as it can make such a huge difference to morale.”

A recent Power Tank survey revealed that only 30% of people write letters to friends and family, while people who received letters instead of emails felt far more uplifted and appreciative as a result. Stuart added: “We want to support our troops while they are on their tours of duty. It’s a long time to be away from home in tough conditions. Our research suggests that writing a letter is a far more rewarding experience, so we hope they put their Power Tank pens to good use.”

There are 1,000 Power Tank pens up for grabs. Any soldier wanting to apply for one should send an email to letters@connect-group.com with the name and address of their military base.
