More pressure on families says leading family lawyer

One of the region’s leading family lawyers says that Chancellor George Osborne’s budget could put extra pressure on families.

Philip Barnsley, head of Higgs & Sons’ family department, says today’s budget could be bad news for families in the region.

“Capping tax credits for families earning £40,000 per annum, combined with freezing child benefit for the next three years and the rise in VAT to 20 per cent from January 2011 would put extra pressure on already tight budgets and could lead to more family breakdowns.

“If members of the family work within the public sector there is also a freeze on pay over £21,000 for the next two years. This is in addition to public sector pension changes which see them being brought in line with consumer prices rather than retail prices.

“The recession has already led to more clients for our divorce specialists and I believe this budget may cause even more family conflict.”

Philip and his team are now reviewing the detail of the budget and will be advising clients in the coming days. To find out how the team can help you and your family contact Philip directly on 0845 111 5050.
