Goodyear UltraGrip 7+ is the top Winter choice, with a stopping distance six car lengths shorter than a conventional tyre on snow.
The Goodyear UltraGrip 7+ has been declared as the safest tyre for the coming winter after a thorough test by Auto Express, Britain’s biggest selling weekly car magazine.
With the dangers and the chaos of the last Winter still fresh in the UK public’s mind, Auto Express organized an independent test to establish the safest tyre to survive another harsh winter.
The magazine tested seven brands of tyre that were designed for cold-weather, comparing them against one conventional summer tyre. The testing took place on snow, on a frozen lake in Sweden and also on dry and wet roads at a test facility.
Six Car lengths Shorter Stopping Distance
The most dramatic test was an emergency braking situation on snow, measuring the time it took for the car to slow from a mere 25mph.
The Goodyear stopped over two metres shorter than other winter tyres and a staggering twenty five metres shorter than the brand new summer tyre that was tested. That equates to a difference of six car lengths.
Kim Adams, Chief Tester at Auto Express stated that the standard tyre was “still doing close to 20mph when the Goodyear had stopped. And we only started braking from 25mph”
Traction to keep Britain moving in Winter
Auto Express also measured the traction when accelerating, noting that the Goodyear gripped with a performance well ahead of its rivals. In fact, compared to the comparison conventional tyre it had over three times the grip. “It’s no wonder our roads grind to a standstill everytime it snows. Imagine the improvement if we all had three times the grip!” added Kim.
Goodyear UltraGrip 7+ Not just a snow specialist
The Goodyear UltraGrip 7+ was a remarkable performer in the wet as well. In two tests that measure aquaplaning , the tyre dominated the testing with a score 18% higher than a rival all-season tyre in the type of road conditions the UK experiences every season!
This is the 12th test win for the company’s cold weather tyres this year alone. The company has won tests in the major winter tyre markets such as Germany and Austria, before dominating this inaugural comprehensive tyre test in the UK.
The legislation regarding winter tyres is diverse across Europe with countries as geographically diverse as Sweden and Slovenia having legislation that enforces the fitment of winter tyres. No such law exists yet in the UK, but the Auto Express results make a compelling case for such legislation.
