Swansea’s famous mascot, Cyril the Swan, joined forces with Mistar Urdd, the face of, Urdd Gobaith Cymru, as they travelled around in a Volkswagen Touran promoting the 2011 cultural youth festival.
The grand tour, made possible by Sinclair Volkswagen, visited over 40 primary schools in the Swansea area showcasing Urdd National Eisteddfod, one of Europe’s largest youth festivals.
The family event is a celebration of the Welsh language and culture as well as showcasing young, Welsh talent and attracts over 15,000 competitors. It will be staged at the city’s Felindre site between 30 May and 4 June next year.
Activities include competitions, crafts, live bands to street theatre, football and climbing walls plus over 100 stalls and exhibitions.
“Having the Urdd National Eisteddfod on your doorstep is an unique opportunity not to be missed,” said Helen Phillips, Urdd Gobaith Cymru’s West Glamorgan development officer.
“The schools tour is a great way to get the campaign for participants under way as all the children received information about the festival and learnt how they could take part.
“We were really grateful to Sinclair Volkswagen for their generous support. Transporting both Cyril and Mistar Urdd is no easy task. Space was essential and the Volkswagen new Touran had plenty of it.”
Clive Hopkins, brand manager at Sinclair Volkswagen in Swansea, said: “We were delighted to help out these two loveable mascots. The Urdd Eisteddfod is a wonderful, cultural experience for families of all ages and we hope that the school tour has encourage many youngsters to get involved and make Swansea’s event the best festival yet.”
