Connect PR hit the headlines

You know it's a busy week at Connect PR when we barely have enough time to shout about the work we have been up to for the past seven days!

But fear not, like a last gasp goal by Manchester United in the 5th minute of stoppage time, we are here to deliver for you.

Speaking of football, we are upping the ante for our colourful client, the Johnstone's Paint Trophy.

With only a matter of weeks until the final at Wembley, we are gearing up for all manner of PR activities to keep the fans of both finalists happy. But before that, we need to know who is going to get there.

Two teams from Carlisle United, Huddersfield Town, Exeter City and Brentford will make the trip, while assisting our PR projects in the process.

So that's the back pages of the national newspapers sorted, what about the front?

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles are asking the question that everyone appears to have an answer for...

...What is the most popular urban myth that people still believe are true?

Apparently, some people think that if you sneeze for your eyes open, they will pop straight out of your head?

We worked with comedian Dave Spikey on a radio campaign on the theme, with the aim of disproving the theory that it is too expensive to get a van serviced at a any Volkswagen Van Centre. Quite simply, it isn't, as Dave explained to radio stations across the country!

As if working with a much loved comedian this week wasn’t enough, we’ve also been dib-dib-dobbing with the UK’s best loved lubricant and multi purpose product, WD-40.

WD-40 has announced a nationwide competition to support its sponsorship of the Scout Association's DIY Activity Badge with a cash prize for the winning troop.

Scout Groups across the UK are being invited to tell WD-40 how they have used their DIY and Scouting skills to make a difference to their community. It could be cleaning up a local park, helping clean up with a litter pick or redecorating and freshening up a community centre or Scout hut.

The winning group will be awarded £500 to use for equipment, materials or resources for their group.

WD-40’s senior brand manager, Neil Gow, says: “We know there are many Scout Groups up and down the country that are making a big difference in their community using their Scouting and DIY skills to help others. We want to celebrate those good examples and reward the youngsters for their efforts.”

Connect PR says: “Thanks for taking the time to read our latest blog. Next week might not be so late in the day, but it will be another mighty fine effort. We promise!”

CONNECT PR HIT THE HEADLINES

As the boss jets off to the sunshine state and our resident blogger soaks up some seaside fun, the powers that be have asked me to muse over this week’s events at Connect PR.

We’ve made sure that the wet weather hasn’t dampened our spirits by battling through to deliver some great news in both our professional and personal lives.

Richard kicked off the week by shaking off an arm injury to step-up to the office oche. The ‘master’ threw some fine WD-40 arrows, but still lacked the accuracy to topple ‘lethal weapon’ who continues to score heavy and finish like a tungsten pro. It wasn’t all bad news for the office joker though, as his love for nature flourished by nurturing and releasing an uninvited giant moth and stag beetle from the building.

The thought of basking in the Tenerife sun couldn’t keep Becki from sourcing a great venue to host HiQ’s Hero award ceremony. The Custard Factory, located in Digbeth, will welcome heroes from across the UK in November as Sally Gunnell crowns an overall hero and rewards them with £5,000 to spend on a local community project.

Lizzie continues to hit the back of the net with some colourful campaigns for the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy and thanks to her best friend will be whisked away to meet Ewan McGregor next week having won an Empire Film competition on twitter.

Meanwhile, Kathy continued to work her magic on a new business pitch and Zoe received hundreds of 3-IN-ONE ponchos and air fresheners to keep fans of the drip oil dry and smelling great. Sue also cracked the wonders of survey monkey to find out heavenly and hellish family driving experiences. So if you have some time over the bank holiday weekend, let us know your family driving habits by taking a few moments to complete the following survey http://ht.ly/2v5pt.

Until next time ...

CONNECT PR HIT THE HEADLINES

As another working week draws to a close and everyone looks forward to another typical wet August weekend, we (as in the Royal we), reflect on the weekly stories behind the Connect PR headlines.

Thanks to Sue’s brush with The Queen last week we’ve all been practising our bows and curtsying, albeit with limited success.

Despite the gloomy weather the team has brightened up the lives of people and businesses across the UK.

As the team ventured far and wide for clients, Lee launched a search for images from young explorers to populate a charity calendar for Goodyear’s safety partnership with Mountain Rescue England and Wales.

The twelve chosen pictures will win an explorers pack featuring a pair of binoculars, mini first aid kit, compass and torch as well as a copy of the 2011 calendar. One overall winner will win a family (two adults) National Trust annual membership package.

Meanwhile Ben announced he was looking for Johnstone’s Paint Trophy’s best dribblers, which prompted Connect PR’s resident football pundit, Zoe, to throw forward a number of League One and Two players for the award.

The misunderstanding was soon cleared up as Ben explained it was second annual ‘Trophy Tot’ award in a bid to find the cutest young fan in this season’s competition.
Following the hugely successful launch of the 2009 award, Johnstone’s are replaying the initiative and it has already been featured on football websites across the land.

Becki's been working wonders with Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, organising lots of regional competitions and flooding the country with coverage.

So read your regional and local press for details on how to win VIP tickets to a race track near you.

Finally, just so everyone can be prepared, with Christmas just around the corner (127 days to go!) Lizzie has presented Uniball with the perfect gift. Creator of cute things, Carrie Lewis, has agreed to produce some festive items to support their Christmas promotion.

Carrie will be using POSCA marker pens and the Signo range to design greetings cards, crackers, baubles and table settings.

Look out for the range in stores near you soon!

Have a good weekend, if you can stay dry. I'm off to water my garden now the hosepipe ban has been lifted...

BACK OF THE NET! JOHNSTONE’S TO UNVEIL NEW WEBSITE

To celebrate its fourth season of sponsorship, the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy has unveiled an action packed new website in time to kick off the new season.

The new website offers fans the “ultimate coverage” experience, from exclusive news, manager interviews and team awards, to goal footage from each round of games with opportunities to win sought after prizes.

Fans can also access the match centre zone to view live statistics, listen to text commentary and monitor results via the match centre scoreboard.

The website is designed to engage with more supporters than ever before through a variety of means, including surveys, polls, and competitions, as well as keeping fans abreast of all the daily on-goings, via twitter and facebook social networking websites.

What’s more, the site now has an enhanced photo gallery, which includes images and video clips from past and present Johnstone’s Paint Trophy competitions and events.

In addition, the site contains a community section to showcase the community-led activities carried out during the season such as projects with local schools and community makeovers.

And finally, to offer fans a personal touch, there is the option to select individual team colours, which are then displayed on each click and reappears every time fans return to the site.

Johnstone’s Paint Trophy Sponsorship Co-ordinator Sally Binns said:

“We wanted to revolutionise the website by injecting colour and life into one of the most vital communication tools, allowing us to engage with more and more fans and followers of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy”

“We spent a great deal of time working on this site with fans and we think it has kicked off the new season perfectly for us. We now look forward to engaging with more and more fans as they sign up to the site!”

A SUMMER SUBSTITUTE FOR THE BEAUTIFUL GAME?

As football supporters across the land continue to twiddle their thumbs during the excruciating close season, the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy has decided to ask fans what other sport is tickling their fancy as a substitute.

The ‘gentleman’s game’ of cricket is widely accepted as the nation’s summer sport, but Johnstone’s want fans to have their say as the meat pies and matchday magic remain a distant memory.

So whether it is cricket, tennis, golf or even darts, supporters are being urged to let the competition know what is tickling their fancy as a sporting substitute to football.

Johnstone’s Paint Trophy brand services manager Tom Newton said: “As passionate football fans ourselves, we are all missing the Beautiful Game, let alone the start of the new Johnstone’s Paint Trophy season.

“As a bit of fun to occupy people’s minds during the close season, we are going to find out what our official summer sport really is.”

One lucky person who enters the poll on the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy’s official website will win an official Johnstone’s Paint Trophy football, signed by goalscoring great and TV pundit Mark Bright.

To enter the trophy’s sporting substitute poll, click on http://www.johnstonespainttrophy.com/

Once each fan has entered the poll, they are asked to email sally.binns@ppg.com with their contact details to stand a chance of winning the prize.

JOHNSTONE’S SEARCH FOR TROPHY TOTS IN TEAM COLOURS

Football fans across Britain are being invited to help create a ‘young and hungry’ fan base for the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy, after the competition launched an appeal to find little dribbling stars of the future.

The trophy, which enjoyed its best ever attendance figures for the 2008/09 season, is now looking for happy new football faces courtesy of an alive-and-kicking baby competition.

Johnstone’s is asking all fans to send pictures of their little ones - clad in team colours – for the chance of their “young star” to feature on its new official website, where they will be displayed in a special Trophy Tots gallery section ahead of the new season.

The first 50 entries will receive a Johnstone’s Paint Trophy mini-football and a Johnstone’s Paint Trophy panel will then pick a shortlist of six in August, which supporters will be able to vote for on the website.

The competition has been created in an attempt to find some of the nation’s cutest and youngest football fans, in a light hearted effort to engage with Football League clubs up and down the country.

It will also coincide with the launch of the trophy’s radical new website, which has been redesigned to engage with more football fans than ever.

Johnstone’s Paint Trophy sponsorship manager Sally Binns said: “We have created a Trophy Tot competition in an attempt to find some budding new fans of the future.

“We’re always keen to interact with supporters of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy and we thought this would be another fun and colourful way of doing so.”

The Trophy Tots initiative will be split into three age categories; 0 - 12 months; 12 months to 2 years and 2 years to 4 years.

All fans have to do is email a picture and age of their little son or daughter, complete in club scarf, hat, shirt or any other memorabilia, to sally.binns@PPG.com by Sunday August 30.

Selected entries will be displayed on http://www.johnstonespainttrophy.com/ in three age categories once the new website launches in early August, each age range will then be shortlisted for fans to vote for the winner.

FANS KEANE ON KEITH AS MIDFIELDER SCOOPS AWARD

Hundreds of Luton Town fans have given midfield dynamo Keith Keane the ultimate summer send off, after voting him as their official Johnstone’s Paint Trophy final man-of-the-match.

Ever since the Hatters’ historic win at Wembley on April 5, Johnstone’s have been urging fans to log onto the company’s website to vote for their player of the final.

More than 1,000 fans voted and Johnstone’s can reveal that Keane got the most nominations, polling 43 per cent of the votes, beating skipper Kevin Nicholls (27 per cent) into second place and Asa Hall into third (18 per cent).

Lucky fan Alan Burgess has been picked at random from those who voted and he will now present Keith with his prize at Kenilworth Road on Friday (June 5).

It will be the second time a Burgess has checked into Kenilworth Road, after Luton signed Andy from Rushden & Diamonds recently – the same name as Alan’s son!

Alan wins a magnum of champagne from the final, which was the only bottle not to get sprayed on the pitch after the final.

The Johnstone’s Paint Trophy decided to come up with the fans’ man of the match award in response to Luton’s phenomenal support for their side at the final at Wembley.

The Hatters’ legions of followers smashed a new-Wembley record for the largest contingent to support a single side at the venue.

Johnstone’s took the unprecedented step of allowing supporters to vote on their website for their man-of-the-match in an attempt to let them have their say.

Johnstone’s Paint Trophy brand services manager Tom Newton said: “We were amazed by the number of votes cast on our website. It is the highest amount we have received for any online competition we have launched.

“The whole project told us two things. Firstly, that Luton Town’s fans are some of the most passionate supporters that we have ever come across.

“Secondly, that pretty much every Luton player could have won the award, as every man received a good proportion of the votes.

“Keith Keane came out on top in the end and, for what it is worth, he was our personal choice too.”

After the celebrations had died down at Wembley following Luton’s win over Scunthorpe, Keane said his performance was the best one he had ever had in a Hatters shirt.

Kevin Nicholls scooped the Football League’s man-of-the-match award on the day, for a similarly inspiring performance.
