A Crewe retailer has boosted its business by appointing two of the region’s most experienced managers.

Crewe Volkswagen has boosted its sales team, welcoming Darren Lancashire as sales manager and Simon Clarke as after sales manager.

The duo brings with them over 25 years’ experience in in the north west motor industry.
Simon, from Nantwich, started his career as an apprentice technician before climbing the career ladder with roles including workshop controller and assistant sales manager.

Speaking of his appointment, 30-year-old Simon, said: “I am looking forward to taking the Crewe Volkswagen team to new successes and providing customers with a service they expect from a prestigious brand.”

Having worked at a range of Volkswagen sites across the country, the last seven years in managerial roles, Darren is confident that the Volkswagen customer approach matches his own.

The 40-year-old from Willaston, said: “I am delighted to have joined the Crewe Volkswagen team and have instantly been made to feel welcome.

HiQ support Government decision to maintain MOT testing frequency

Leading national garage chain, HiQ, is championing the Government’s decision to maintain the frequency of MOT testing after warning it would have ‘hit the pockets of motorists harder than ever.’

The decision to make a U-turn on the proposal to change testing from 3-1-1 to 4-2-2 came from Transport Secretary Justine Greening, who stated that the Government would instead work with the industry to focus on reliability and standards of garages.

For HiQ, this is welcome news as the brand continues to position itself as a category leader in self-regulation and transparency.

HiQ’s fast fit manager, Stuart Carr, said: “The decision to maintain MOT testing frequency is a positive one not only for us as a garage franchise, but for motorists in general.

“If the decision had gone ahead, we raised huge concerns on the grounds of safety and the negative cost implications it would have had on motorists driving around with defects for longer.”

The garage industry will now be under the spotlight to deliver a satisfactory service to motorists and each will have to publish MOT performance data to help improve standards.

Legal firm shows support for food bank this winter

Black Country law firm Higgs & Sons has shown its support for a local food bank by donating eight large boxes of essential supplies.

The team, led by head of employment, Tim Jones, put together the boxes for Black Country Foodbank which helps vulnerable individuals and families in crisis through the provision of three days of emergency food supplies while a longer-term solution is developed.

Each Higgs’ box contained tinned food, cereals and other essentials, providing enough food for 120 meals. The Foodbank helps around 6,500 people each year, providing 65,000 meals. The demand for its services is rapidly rising with an increase of 47 per cent last year alone.

Speaking of the contribution, Foodbank co-ordinator Wendy Fryatt said: “At Foodbank we're so pleased that local companies like Higgs & Sons aspire to contribute to their local community in this very practical way. The food which Higgs’ staff have donated will make a difference to those families and individuals referred to us over the coming weeks."

Tim Jones said of the donation: “We had a most moving and humbling tour of the Black Country Foodbank when taking our contribution. In addition to the food they are involved in all sorts of other projects including Christmas presents for needy children.

Sinclair van specialists scoop national trophy

A team of specialists from a Swansea business is celebrating after winning a coveted national title.

Team Sinclair, from the Sinclair Van Centre on Gorseinon Road Swansea , has been crowned the most knowledgeable aftersales’ experts by Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles UK.

The four-strong Sinclair Van centre team emerged victorious after beating over 60 other aftersales teams from across the UK Volkswagen network.

The battle of expertise quiz focused on all aspects of Volkswagen aftersales practices to assess the knowledge of the commercial vehicle network in the national final at Volkswagen’s UK headquarters in Milton Keynes.

Kevin Jones, team member and master technician at Sinclair stated: “It was certainly a fun way to review the technicial knowledge that is essential to ensure we keep our customers vehicles correctly maintained.

Huw Jones, parts advisor, commented: “The Sinclair Group prides itself on providing a consistent level of service and this is only possible with regular training. They say knowledge is power and this is certainly true for us.

Volkswagen team pedal to Paris for cancer charity

A ladies night at a Bury St Edmunds car retailer helped raise over £1,000 for a cancer charity.

Over 125 ladies attended the event at Northgate Volkswagen as it was transformed into a venue to raise money for Macmillian Cancer Research.

The Ladies Pampering and Shopping Night was organised to help showcase the fundraising efforts of a team from Northgate Volkswagen who are taking part in the London to Paris cycle ride in July in aid of the charity.

Cars were moved aside as the showroom was converted into a pampering arena of beauty treatments, colour analysis sessions plus stalls of homemade crafts, gifts and jewellery.

Shaun Barlow, Joe Parmenter and Terry Scott from Bury St Edmunds hailed the event as a huge success as Volkswagen business manager, Shaun, explained.

He said: “We were overwhelmed with the response and the money raised.

“We are very grateful to our colleagues who helped sell tickets for the evening and kindly baked cakes as refreshments for our guests.

“We were delighted that so many local shops and suppliers supported the event, with over 22 different stalls and services there was plenty to keep everyone entertained.”

The £1,000 raised on the night was generated through tickets sales and a raffle supported by stall holders and Northgate Volkswagen.

Shaun, added: “The three of us all cycle but the 408km ride in July, which we have to complete in four days, is certainly a tough challenge for us.

“The money raised has certainly kick started our fundraising efforts as we have a target of £4,650. We are so pleased our employer was willing to let us take over the showroom for the night.

“There is a lot of organisation to events like this and a special thanks must go our work colleague, Amelia, who helped coordinate the stall holders.”

Robert Rolfe, brand manager at Northgate Volkswagen, added: “The spacious showroom provides plenty of space for this sort of event so we were more than happy to support our staff on their impressive charity challenge.”

Kirkcaldy teenager given exclusive apprenticeship

A young car enthusiast from Kirkcaldy has embarked on a three-year training course with the aim of becoming the best in the business.

Michael Given (18), from Burnt Island, has been accepted by Volkswagen retailer, Specialist Cars in Kirkcaldy to be the latest recruit on the company’s technician apprenticeship scheme.
Over the next three years Specialist Cars will invest nearly £40,000 to train Michael through to technician status.

Michael originally approached Specialist Cars for a role at its customer services centre. The team felt his knowledge, skills and passion were more suited to the apprentice programme and offered him the role.

Speaking of his new role Michael said: “I have always been technically minded and fascinated by the way things work so I am really looking forward to working on Volkswagen vehicles.

“I decided to turn down a university place to study astrophysics so I am over the moon to have secured the apprenticeship with Specialist Cars. My aim is to go as far as I can in my career.

“This is a great opportunity for me and I want to show everyone how much this apprenticeship means to me.”

PERSIMMON HOMES SIGNS AGREEMENT TO BUILD 1,985 AFFORDABLE HOMES

One of the UK’s leading housebuilders has secured funding from the Homes and Communities Agency to build 1,985 affordable homes across England over the next three years.

Persimmon Homes has been awarded funding of £20.64 million to build the homes as part of the Government’s National Affordable Housing Programme (NAHP).

Persimmon Homes is the first major housebuilder to be awarded the funding, which is designed to increase the supply of affordable homes in England.

Dr Ashley Lane, group partnerships director for Persimmon Homes, said the funding was great news for both the business and local communities across England. “Construction will begin in 2012 and we are currently evaluating a number of schemes throughout England.

“Our objective is to engage with local authorities and housing associations to deliver low cost homes for both shared ownership and social rent.”

Graham Mitchell will head up Kings Lynn Volkswagen’s sales team bringing with him over a decade of brand experience.

Twickenham business receives government training boost

A Twickenham business has introduced a new government-funded apprentice training programme aimed at strengthening its customer service.

Twickenham Volkswagen, in association with the Learning Skills Partnership, has launched a course to introduce new talent into the automotive industry and enhance its offering.

Mikkia Glean-Lewis, from Strawberry Hill, accepted the new customer host role and will begin a six month intensive training programme, resulting in a NVQ Level 2 customer service qualification.

The 18-year-old successfully completed an assessment day which included group exercises and an individual presentation in front of a panel of Inchcape managers and representatives from the Learning Skills Partnership, in addition to a one-to-one interview.

Speaking of her appointment, Mikkia, added: “I had recently completed a business finance administration course at college and decided an apprenticeship would be the ideally opportunity to start building my business skills.

“The interview process was very nerve wracking but I am delighted to have secured the position.

“I’m looking at increasing my product knowledge and help provide customers with the highest level of service.”

The dedicated role was launched following customer feedback. The training programme covers all customer facing skills including body language and problem solving plus in-depth product knowledge.

Volkswagen passenger cars is carrying out a pilot scheme with the Learning Skills Partnership across a number of sites in the UK as course co-ordinator, Lee Wilks explains.

He said: “The on-going pilot scheme has shown promise and will be fully assessed in the near future. We hope the government-funded programme will continue and introduce further customer host roles across the Volkswagen network.”

Twickenham Volkswagen’s brand manager, Mark Foulston, said: “This new role is not about selling its more about being the first point of contact for customers, ensuring their experience is dealt with efficiently and effectively.

Stourbridge Volkswagen, part of Trust Group UK, trialled the use of SMS messages for the first time to ask customers to sign up for its free-to-join scheme which gives customers a range of complimentary services such as free MOT tests for life and monthly complimentary deluxe service washes.

The trial provided automatic entry for all those who signed up into a free prize draw and proved to be incredibly successful, with nearly 200 responses received.

South Wales business appoints two new brand managers

A South Wales business has appointed two of the region’s most experienced automotive managers.

Volkswagen retailer, Sinclair has appointed Clive Hopkins and Tim Gowling to lead their Commercial Vehicle businesses in Swansea and Cardiff.

Clive will bring 35 years of automotive knowledge to the van centre on Gorseinon Road, Swansea, while Tim who has spent 16 years at Sinclair Volkswagen Port Talbot will take over as the head of the Van Centre in Cardiff.

Sixteen-year-old Nathan Horne has been accepted by Volkswagen car retailer, Specialist Cars in Aberdeen to be the latest recruit on the company’s parts apprenticeship scheme

Over the next three years Specialist Cars will invest nearly £40,000 to train Nathan to become a parts advisor.

Nathan started after finishing his GCSE’s at Harlaw Academy in Aberdeen. His ambition to work in the automotive industry was evident in his interview which secured him the apprenticeship.

Nathan said: “I love all types of vehicles and this is my dream job. I am passionate about the Volkswagen brand and I want to go as far in my career as I can.

“I am over the moon to be given this opportunity and very grateful to Specialist Cars for giving me this chance.

“I am determined to show everyone how much this apprenticeship means to me.”

Volkswagen bring vans to Bridgwater

A south west automotive group has expanded its services for van drivers in the region.

Taunton Van Centre, with all its team, has invested £100,000 in relocating to a new larger state-of-the-art site in Bridgwater to help strengthen its customer service.

The owners, Silver Street Automotive, has redeveloped a disused unit next to its existing car site on Bristol Road to house the growing commercial vehicle range.

The new premises, which will be named Bridgwater Van Centre, will feature three dedicated workshop and MOT bays, a five vehicle showroom plus an extensive forecourt display.

Ipswich business receives a £75,000 boost

An award-winning Ipswich business is investing £75,000 to improve its facilities for customers.

Wolsey Van Centre, which was awarded the 2010 Most Valued Volkswagen Van Centre Gold Award by the Volkswagen Commercial Vehicle brand, will undergo the refurbishment programme during December and January.

The showroom will be expanded to 350 square metres, allowing customers to view a wider range of vehicles. Customers will also benefit from improved refreshment facilities and extending opening hours, as Wolsey Van Centre head of business, David Nichols explains.

Van centre pledge to ‘BOB’ air ambulance

A Milton Keynes business has pledged to raise thousands of pounds before Christmas for the region’s air ambulance service.

Wayside Volkswagen Van Centre is donating £10 for every test drive taken from now until the end of the year, with all proceeds going to the Thames Valley and Chiltern Air Ambulance.

More affectionately referred to as ‘BOB’, the air ambulance service covers the three counties of Berkshire, Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire.

As the local service for Milton Keynes residents, the air ambulance completes on average one mission a week in the area.

The Volkswagen business has committed to a minimum donation of £1,000 but is expecting demand for its new test drive service to generate even more funds.

Wayside Volkswagen Van Centre fleet sales manager, Paul Robertson, said: “You just never know when you may require the air ambulance and to know that there is a team of experts on hand who may just save you or your loved ones’ life, is very reassuring.”

The charity run service has to raise £2.8 million a year to enable the air ambulance to keep flying. It presently completes on average three missions a day costing £2,000 for each flight.

Paul, added: “To help raise as much as possible for ‘BOB’, we have launched a new test drive programme where we take the vehicles direct to the businesses, removing the need for the customers travelling to us.”

Air Ambulance fundraising manager for Milton Keynes, Laura Nicholas, said: “We are completely reliant on the support of businesses like Wayside Volkswagen Van Centre to ensure our ongoing service so certainly hope that many van operators take advantage of the test drive programme.”

The ‘BOB’ air ambulance service is in its 11th year of operation and is continually raising funds to help increase its flying hours and to strengthen its service for the region.

Matthew Garbutt has been accepted by Stourbridge Volkswagen, part of Trust Group UK, to be the latest recruit on the company’s technician apprenticeship scheme.

Over the next three years Stourbridge Volkswagen will invest nearly £40,000 to train Matthew through to technician status.

The 17-year old joined straight from leaving Stourbridge College where he studied motor vehicles, and is looking forward to achieving his ambition of working in the automotive industry for a highly regarded brand.

FUNDRAISING BALL MAKES THOUSANDS FOR MACCLESFIELD CHARITY

A Macclesfield charity has been boosted following its annual fundraising ball at The Tytherington Club.

JJ’s Sensory Play Centre’s fifth annual charity ball, sponsored again by Gilbert Lawton Volkswagen, generated over £7,000 for the South Cheshire children’s charity.

JJ’s, which relies entirely on donations, is a soft padded multi-sensory facility that provides relaxation and stimulation for children and adults with special needs.

The money raised will go towards the annual costs of providing the centre, which co-founder Joanne Griffiths admits needs all the money it can get.

She said: “The charity ball has helped raise money which is vital to keep the charity going.

“It costs about £45,000 a year to run the charity and the annual ball is key to the centre remaining open.

“The continued success of the ball and the play centre isn’t possible without the support of local businesses, including Gilbert Lawton, and this is greatly appreciated by everyone at JJ’s.”

The centre is open six days a week and has over 200 people regular coming along to use the facilities.

It is primarily aimed at children and adults with learning disabilities, but is open for children under three who don’t come under those categories.

Further improvements are planned but Joanne knows without further investment the additional equipment will be put on hold.

She added: “As people spend less money on activities so we have seen a drop in revenue and while we understand the situation, it’s frustrating we can’t improve the current facilities for those who attend JJ’s.

“Ideally the centre needs about £10,000 for a new lighting system which would greatly improve the enjoyment and benefits to the children and adults.”

Nick Ashton, brand manager at Gilbert Lawton Macclesfield, said: “JJ’s provides a fantastic service to the local and regional community and we’re delighted to be able to continue our involvement in raising money and awareness of the charity for the third consecutive year.

It’s not every day that a group of branch and sale managers, procurement teams and senior management get the chance to down tools for a set of darts and a chance to beat a world champion.

But that’s exactly the scenario that delegates at the Graham national conference in Birmingham found themselves in last month, when they stepped to the oche to take on Mark Webster.

As sponsor of professional darts player Mark Webster since January this year, Uponor invited visitors to the stand to put their precision skills to the test in a direct competition with Mark himself.

Over 100 people took the challenge with many winning a set of Uponor branded darts for beating Mark's six-dart score with their own nine-dart total. The top scorer each hour was then invited back to play Mark in a traditional game of ‘501’.

Martin Nichols, branch manager at the Graham Plymouth branch, threw the top score of the first hour and played Mark in the professional match format. He finished on double 16 to win the game and walked away with a dart board signed by Mark.

Three years of hard work has paid off for a Pendeford administrator after she qualified as a service advisor with Wolverhampton Volkswagen.

Laura Davis (24) joined the Bilston Road retailer in 2003 as a receptionist and soon progressed to an administrator within the servicing division before commencing her service advisor qualification.

Speaking of her qualification Laura said: “I’m delighted to have qualified after a very demanding three years.

“I pride myself on giving the best service possible. The qualification has given me the extra knowledge, experience and confidence to ensure customers’ needs are consistently met.”

Through the Volkswagen Training Academy Laura completed a series of both practical and written exams covering all aspects of customer satisfaction and product knowledge.

Her final assessment was an on-site role play in front of key Volkswagen representatives, which Laura passed with flying colours.

BUSINESS SHOCKED AS LETTER ARRIVES FROM 1993

When a recent delivery of mail arrived at a West Cumbrian business one letter stood out from the rest.

As Walkingshaw Volkswagen staff looked through the delivery they noticed one of the envelopes had taken a while to reach the business.

For the letter was posted in 1993, meaning it had taken 18 years to reach its destination, even though it was sent from a company just 18 miles down the road in Calderbridge.

The letter was sent to Walkingshaw’s old address, but even more remarkable was the contents of the envelope; it contained a cheque for a payment on a car.

Andy Walkingshaw, brand manager at Walkingshaw Volkswagen, said: “We noticed the letter was unusual because it was in a plastic bag with a note from the Post Office offering apologies for the poor condition of the item.

“When we looked at the date stamp we realised just how long it had taken to reach us and were amazed.

“I don’t think the company that issued the cheque is still in existence, but anyway the delay would mean it could no longer be cashed. There must have been some amusing conversations back in 1993 along the lines of ‘the cheque’s in the post’.

“Although this was before my time and no-one here can remember the incident, I’m sure the money would have been paid eventually.

“We’ve been in business since 1968 and a Volkswagen franchise since 1985, but we’ve never had anything arrive this late before, post or otherwise.

“We moved to our new site at Lillyhall in 1999 so for the letter to reach us after so long is remarkable.”

The envelope and its contents have now been filed in the company’s archives but the incident is still providing a talking point for staff and customers alike.

STATE-OF-THE-ART VEHICLE FOR YORKSHIRE RESCUE TEAM

Four years of fundraising have paid off for a Yorkshire mountain rescue team after it took delivery of a brand new vehicle, full of the latest communication technology.

The Upper Wharfedale Fell Rescue Association (UWFRA) spent many years struggling with an old box trailer they towed to major incident scenes to use as a communications base.

But thanks to the fundraising effort, the team now has a brand new Incident Control vehicle packed with state-of-the-art equipment, from Cleckheaton-based Volkswagen Van Centre (West Yorkshire)

The vehicle (above) is a specially adapted short wheel base 4x4 Volkswagen Transporter with special off road tyres and front and rear swivel seats.

Mike Brown, transport officer, at the UWFRA, is delighted with the new vehicle and knows it will provide a vital link between members of the team and other emergency services.

He said: “The old trailer we used was 30 years old and just had a couple of radios inside and with no heating, it was pretty grim in winter!

“As it only had room for one person discussions with our controllers, the police and other key personnel had to done outside in all types of weather.

“We needed a four wheel drive vehicle, but it had to be compact enough to navigate the tracks and pass through the gateways found in the Dales.

“We took months to find the right one and then ensure it had all the equipment we needed along with the capability to navigate rough terrain. Volkswagen’s reputation for ruggedness, durability and reliability meant the Transporter was the perfect choice for us.

“Special thanks must go to everyone at Volkswagen Van Centre (West Yorkshire) in Cleckheaton which has provided UWFRA with the ideal vehicle to use on rescues.

“It could potentially enable us to save lives, especially as we reach the colder months of the year with some of the harshest weather conditions.”

The Upper Wharfedale Fell Rescue team, based in Grassington, is the third oldest team in the country and consists of over 80 highly trained volunteers who are on call 365 days a year.

They are one of only three teams in the country who perform both surface and underground rescues - all three are in the Yorkshire Dales.

Mike added: “In 2010 the team attended a record 40 call outs and this year we’re already on course to go passed that total.

“It costs approximately £35,000 to run the team every year and the funds for the new vehicle were in addition to the normal annual costs.

“We cannot thank the local people enough for their generosity and in particular Mark Wheelwright from Volkswagen Van Centre (West Yorkshire) who was really keen to be involved in our major project and gave great support in driving it through for us.

“We are all volunteers and while we’re willing to go out in all weather conditions on the fells or down caves if someone needs help, everyone has been boosted by the extra assistance the Volkswagen Transporter will provide.”

In addition to the latest technology the modified Volkswagen Transporter can carry four personnel and has a 40 foot electronic mast to aid communication.

Andrew Caygill, brand manager at Volkswagen Van Centre (West Yorkshire), said: “The members of the Upper Wharfedale Fell Rescue Association risk their lives in sometimes terrible weather to help people in the Dales.

“We’re pleased to have been able to help facilitate this vehicle and hope it provides many years of service.”

Charity jump to raise hundreds for Children in Need

Players from Derby County Football Club are teaming up with a Mackworth business to help raise hundreds of pounds for this year’s Children in Need appeal.

Imperial Commercials, Derby’s dedicated Volkswagen commercial vehicle site, is inviting the members of the public to join its staff and Derby county players in a charity bungee jump fun day, taking place on Friday 18th November.

The Ashbourne Road van centre team will be plummeting 175 feet in a series of sponsored bungee jumps and welcomes visitors to take their own charity plunge to help raise funds for the annual children’s appeal.

The bungee jump will be erected in the Volkswagens forecourt and will take place between 10:30am and 4pm, refreshments will also be available.

The Derby County Football Club players will be available in the afternoon to greet fans and sign autographs.

Van drivers will also have the opportunity to get Derby County match day tickets as 20 pairs will be up for grabs to anyone who test drives a new Volkswagen vehicle on the day.

Matthew Lawrenson, regional director at Imperial Commercials, said: “This is a great opportunity for the business to help raise awareness and money for a worthy cause.

“Staff are busy fundraising for their bungee jumps and we hope that other members of the public take advantage of the 175 feet plunge and give generously.

The club has just been passed the keys of a new Volkswagen Caddy van as part of the continued link with main sponsors, Pentraeth Volkswagen Van Centre.

The Caddy will mainly be used by manager, Neville Powell, as he scouts rival teams and to take the kit and other materials for matches and training.

A young car enthusiast from Hollinwood has just embarked on an exclusive three-year apprenticeship with an Oldham business.

Matthew Friend, 17, has been accepted by Oldham Volkswagen retailer Smith Knight Fay, on to the technician apprenticeship scheme.

Over the next three years Smith Knight Fay will invest nearly £40,000 to train Matthew through to technician status.

Matthew, who has joined straight after leaving Astley Sports College, is looking forward to achieving his ambition of working on Volkswagen vehicles.

He said: “I’m delighted to have been given this opportunity and very grateful to Smith Knight Fay Volkswagen for giving me this chance.

“I have family members who are technicians which has helped me develop an understanding of all types of vehicles and this is the only job I have ever wanted to do.

Guy Twiselton, from Kidlington, has joined Volkswagen retailer Ridgeway Oxford Kidlington as general sales manager.

Having worked in the automotive industry straight from school, the 28-year-old has quickly progressed up the career ladder, where he has held various managerial roles for the past five years.

Aberdeen business helps support students future

Volkswagen car retailer, Specialist Cars, has strengthened its support for Cults Academy’s vocational car mechanic course, in order to provide a realistic insight into the automotive sector.

The two-year course is still in its infancy with student numbers increasing year-on-year.

It is reliant on the support of high profile businesses and industry bodies to deliver a realistic curriculum for its students, as Cults Academy’s department head, Peter Flood, explains.

He said: “It is imperative that educational establishments, such as the Cults Academy, makes a concerted effort to help make students employable.

It may not have looked like a typical day at the dealership for staff at J S Holmes Ltd, clad in pink and raising money for charity, but spirits were high as the team took part in a Fun day Friday for Breast Cancer Care.

Staff at the approved used car Nissan and Ford dealership on High Road, together with their fast fit partner, HiQ, downed tools and invited customers to enjoy freshly baked cakes and refreshments, in return for small donations to the charity.

Hosted for a second year running, the team turned the dealership pink with a whole host of decorations and pink HiQ memorabilia, including company branded race suits and hats.

Customers also sponsored director of J S Holmes Ltd, Martin Holmes, as he had his chest waxed, in a bid to boost the total amount raised.

Speaking of the charity fundraiser on Friday 28^th October, Martin said: “It was a great, albeit very painful day.

“Breast Cancer Care is a very important charity to us and for the last couple of years; we have hosted fundraisers as a way of showing our support and getting involved.

“Being established in the area for over 50 years, it was great to see our customers enjoying the day and getting into the spirit of fundraising. I’m sure they all had a laugh at my expense too!

MARATHON MAN RUNNING FOR CHARITY

A Newtownards man is gearing up for the run of his life as he prepares to raise up £1,000 for charity.

Ian Calderwood will be pounding the streets of Dublin on the 31st October as he aims to complete the Dublin Marathon and generate vital funds for the Haematology Research Centre at Belfast City Hospital.

The 42-year-old has never run a full marathon before, but has been training since January to ensure he’s fighting fit for the event.

The general sales manager at Isaac Agnew Volkswagen on Boucher Road in Belfast is raising the funds after his father-in-law was treated at the hospital unit and a work colleague is currently being treated there.

He said: “The training has been tough but not as tough as the people who have undergone and are still having treatment at the haematology department.

“I’m hoping to raise about £1,000 and will run the marathon knowing the money will be going to a very good cause. The current total is £882.

“I’ve had lots of support from friends, family and work colleagues at Isaac Agnew Volkswagen; some of who will travel to Dublin to cheer me on.”

Brian Robinson, managing director at Isaac Agnew Volkswagen, has been one of those encouraging Ian during his training and is proud to have staff prepared to raise money for good causes.

He said: “Ian has devoted many months of his time to training properly for the marathon and we wish him every success in the event and raising the money for the Haematology Research Centre at Belfast City Hospital.”

National recognition for motoring profession

A motoring specialist from Aberdeen has been rewarded for his outstanding levels of customer service by one of Europe’s largest car manufacturers.

Service advisor, Craig Huggins, who works at Specialist Cars was named as one of Volkswagen’s top ten service advisors in the UK.

The 23-year-old, who joined the Volkswagen retailer in 2009 has specialised in the automotive service industry for eight years. Craig successfully completed a series of assessments and role plays to achieve his prestigious status.

As part of his graduation Craig enjoyed a three day trip to Volkswagen’s factory and museum in Wolfsburg, Germany.

Speaking of his recent status, Craig said: “To have my work labelled as one of the best in the country makes me incredibly proud.

“I was delighted to visit the Volkswagen factory and the AutoStadt museum. It was a truly amazing experience and one that I will certainly remember.”

Hard up motorists swerving into part worn tyre torment

Millions of motorists are risking serious accidents by driving around on part worn and second hand tyres, after defective tyres were blamed for 1,210 casualties on British roads last year.

With the slow recovery of the UK’s economy, the HiQ fast fit network can reveal that more 35 per cent of motorists are currently purchasing second hand or used tyres.

Figures from the Department for Transport show that 18 motorists were killed during 2010 from defective tyres, bringing the number of tyre related deaths on UK roads in the last five years to 164.

To coincide with the release of these figures, HiQ has commissioned its own research which reveals that millions of motorists are willingly putting themselves at risk by buying part worn, second hand tyres that are ‘unsafe’ and a ‘false economy.’

The survey found that over a third of motorists have bought used tyres with over 40% saying they did so to save money.

Almost half of those questioned said they didn’t consider the possible dangers involved with buying used tyres, despite many coming from written off cars and imported from Eastern European scrapyards.

Nearly a third of those surveyed did not know that part-worn tyres can actually suffer from severe structural damage which can’t be seen with the naked eye.

Nearly half of motorists were not aware that part worn tyres can also add two car lengths to a car’s stopping distance in the wet when travelling at just 50mph.

Furthermore, less than a third actually considered the false economy involved in buying used tyres, which typically don’t last as long and need replacing much sooner than new tyres.

The HiQ fast fit network said that while appreciating that times were hard, motorists were in fact paying five times more money for second hand tyres in the long run compared to a mid-range or budget new tyre.

A used tyre has typically 3 mm of tread left on it. As 1.6mm is the minimum legal tread depth, motorists are paying for just 1.4mm of useable tread compared to 6.4mm of useable tread from a new tyre that typically has 8mm of tread when new. HiQ’s message to motorists is to simply do the maths. Used tyres are a false economy.

Richard Edy, director of the NTDA (National Tyre Distributors Association) said that around 60 per cent of all part worns are imported from mainland Europe.

He said: “A used tyre working group for the Government states that there are three million used tyres sold on the UK roads each year, up from 2 million last year. Of that total, around 10 per cent of the total are part-worn tyres.

“Around 60 per cent of part worn tyres will originate from mainland Europe, with German imports figuring significantly.

“German motorists are far more responsible about replacing their tyres than motorists in the UK. The vast majority opt for winter tyres and won’t want to put their summer tyres back on their cars if they only boast around 4mm in tread depth.

“Many of those tyres then end up on our cars over here.” HiQ Retail Marketing

Manager Geraldine McGovern said: “In the vast majority of cases many part worn tyres are retailed illegally as they are not clearly marked as partworn at the point of sale. The main misconception is that they are simply ‘worn’ and everything else is OK. The truth is you never know where they are from.

“But the overriding message is that they are a false economy and extremely unsafe.

“We take tyre safety extremely seriously and if there is a small chance that a tyre might not perform as it should, then we could never recommend them, no

matter how cheap they are.

“We are offering free tyre safety checks at all of our centres and we are committed to providing the right tyre for each and every motorist, whatever their budget.

“We completely appreciated the financial constraints around many motorists’ pockets right now, but they can actually save money in the long term by purchasing new tyres at affordable prices instead of part worns.”

Van centre helping to empower workers with disabilities

A High Wycombe business has pledged its support for a charity scheme which helps to prepare people with learning difficulties for work.

The Norwood Charity is organising a commercial car wash in Hatch End and have been provided with a Volkswagen Transporter from Citygate Volkswagen Van Centre.

Norwood Future Clean, which is part of the charity’s supported employment programme, is a training project that teaches participants vital work skills.

Head of business at Citygate Volkswagen, Mark Hudson said: “We’re proud to support the Future Clean programme and are glad that we can be of assistance by providing a van.

“As a business we’re always happy to get involved in the community and support fantastic causes.”

Staff at a Watford retailer have raised hundreds of pounds for charity by running the recent Harpenden 10k.

Nine staff at Citygate Watford are still receiving money for the event, but hope the total is over £250 for Grove House Hospice.

The team of Kelly Demello, Sean Hughes, Daniel Antunes, Alex Trill, John Rowlands, Abdul Al-Ahmad, Nikki Poole, Rob Agim and Steve Telling, completed the course in under 48 minutes.

Peter Wood, brand manager at Citygate Watford, is proud of his staff who donated their time to raise money for a good cause.

He said: “The staff at Watford are always putting themselves out for customers and this is showcased by the nine staff donating time to raise money for charity.

Higgs masterminds charity quiz night

There were no Weakest Links at the recent Higgs & Sons quiz night, as the legal firm brought together employees, clients, professional contacts and even footballer Steve Bull, to raise near on £4,000 for charity.

Working through 10 rounds of pub quiz questions, 46 teams were brought together in Brierley Hill to raise the money for the Ladies Fighting Breast Cancer (LFBC) charity.

On the night, the team from local chartered accountants, Griffiths and Pegg, proved worthy winners for a second year running, retaining their 2010 title.

LFBC is a Midlands-based charity that raises funds to provide equipment to aid diagnosis. Run by a group of volunteers, numerous fundraising events are held throughout the year, raising awareness of the condition that affects one in eight women in the UK.

he charity’s co-founder and chairwoman, Veronica Kumeta, said: “It was great to see how many local organisations had gathered together for the charity. For a cause that touches so many people, it’s a huge boost towards funding for the much needed equipment at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. It was a great evening!”

A Chester business is going all pink this week (Friday 28th), hoping to raise over £1,000 for charity.

Dane Volkswagen on Sealand Road will be hosting a Pink Friday in aid of Breast Cancer Awareness, including a raffle and wash and vac service and a ladies evening.

All staff at the retailer will be dressed in pink, with a prize for the best dressed customer who comes along during the day.

The event is on all day, but at 5pm the showroom will be turned into ‘ladies evening’ with car maintenance sessions, home baked refreshments and many prizes in the raffle.

Organiser, Lynsey Axon, is hoping to see as many people attend and is promising an event to remember.

She said: “It should be a fantastic event, which we hope will raise lots of money for a great charity.

“Some of the raffles prizes are worth hundreds of pounds and we also have some competitions specifically for children to make it a real family event.

“The staff will be bringing in freshly baked cakes, others are donating time to demonstrate car maintenance and the remaining will ensure everyone who attends has a good time.”

Among the main raffles prizes are car service plans worth up to £349, MOTs and winter safety packs.

The parts department will be donating a percentage of all sales made during the day to the fund, while all the money made from selling refreshments and the wash and vac service will go to Breast Cancer Awareness

A prominent High Wycombe business has invested half a million pounds in a state-of-the-art centre in the town.

Vehicle retailer group, Citygate, will move its Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles site to the new premises on Holtspur Lane in Wooburn Green.

A Stockport retailer is celebrating as two of its staff join an exclusive club after being recognised for their outstanding services to the automotive industry.

Lily Heeley and Steve Simcock were presented with Volkswagen Gold Pins for exceptional and long service to the brand, at a recent ceremony in London.

The Volkswagen Gold Pin is the highest international accolade given by the brand to individuals. Only about 20 people are awarded the Gold Pin every year.

The duo have together served 50 years with Volkswagen and at Smith Knight Fay in Stockport, having both started as apprentices in 1986.

Lily, (41) from Stockport, is the new vehicle supply manager, while Steve, (41) from Hazel Grove, is the retailer’s master technician.

“I’m thrilled to have been awarded a Gold Pin, it’s a huge honour to be recognised by Volkswagen UK, said Lily.

“Both Steve and I started on apprenticeship schemes at the same time and it’s great to be sharing this success with him.”

£1M REFURB FOR CREWE BUSINESS

A prominent Crewe business has invested £1m in a state-of-the-art premises in the town.

Work has already started at transforming the current Crewe Volkswagen building and is expected to be completed in February, with the aim of creating new jobs in the future.

The refurbishment will see the showroom increase from seven cars to eleven and an extra two ramps in the workshop.

HiQ tickled pink by Silverstone supporters' generosity

The HiQ fast fit network is well and truly tickled pink with fans of the Dunlop British Touring Car Championship, whose clamour for official memorabilia helped raise £6,000 for Breast Cancer Care.

For the third time this season, the Teams’ Championship sponsors parked up their eye-catching pink stand on the outfield and watched as the crowds flocked to pick up HiQ hats, large foam spanners and all number of T-shirts and goody bags.

The HiQ team, together with the pink ladies and special guest Beverley Edwards - who won HiQ’s national grid girl competition - managed to boost the championship total to more than £15,000 for the season.

In the process, HiQ smashed the £80,000 mark for Breast Cancer Care since partnering with the charity in 2009.

A young motor enthusiast from Coltishall has embarked on an exclusive three-year training programme with the aim of becoming the best in the business.

Seventeen-year-old Sean Rose, has been accepted by Norwich’s Volkswagen Van Centre, Robinsons, as the latest recruit on the technician apprenticeship scheme.

Over the next three years Robinsons Van Centre will invest nearly £40,000 to train Sean through to technician status.

The dedicated apprentice successfully completed a motor mechanics course at City College Norwich to increase his automotive knowledge and employment opportunities and is now looking forward to achieving his ambition of working in the motor industry.

He said: “I am very pleased to have secured my apprenticeship and grateful to Robinsons Van Centre for giving me this chance.

“My uncle was a car mechanic and I believe this started my passion for the motor industry. Alongside the apprenticeship I will be utilising my new skills to renovate an old car I have recently bought.”

Top trio’s trip to international headquarters

An Exeter business has rewarded three of its employees with a trip to Germany after they all qualified from a national training programme.

The trio from Mann Egerton Volkswagen visited the manufacturer’s global factory in Wolfsburg during the visit following the demanding qualifications with the Volkswagen Academy.

Phil Perry from Exeter recently gained his sales specialist status after three years of training. The 31-year-old has spent all his working life in the motor industry, six of which have been at Mann Egerton Volkswagen.

He was joined in Germany by Jonathan Eastment, from Brixham, and Gavin Viney from Newton Abbott, who also qualified as sales specialists after completing the programme, which included customer service and product training, along with both written and practical tests.

Commenting on the trip Phil said: “I’m very grateful to Mann Egerton Volkswagen for giving me the opportunity to visit the impressive headquarters in Wolfsburg.

Managing director gets back in the saddle for charity

A West Midlands managing director has completed a sponsored bike ride, raising £1,200 for a children’s charity.

Andrew Hockedy, who manages Trust Group UK which has three Volkswagen sites in Redditch, Wolverhampton and Stourbridge, cycled 100 kilometres for Action Medical Research.

The 49-year-old, who is based at Wolverhampton Volkswagen, took part in the organised Warwick 100 ride around the Warwickshire countryside, to help raise awareness of the leading UK-wide medical research charity dedicated to helping babies and children.

Speaking of the ride, Andrew, said: “It was certainly a tough challenge but one I relished.

“I was a keen cyclist when I was younger and even rode 1,500 mile of my own Tour de France route, but I hadn’t been on a bike in years.

“The charity ride has revived my passion for the saddle so much so that I have committed to three further races for Action Medical Research.

“I am very grateful to all sponsors and aim to double my donation total over the forthcoming rides.”

Andrew plans to cycle from Land’s End to John O’Groats next year to raise further funds for Action Medical Research.

Telford business receives government training boost

A Telford business has introduced a new government-funded apprentice training programme aimed at strengthening its customer service.

Inchcape Volkswagen, in association with the Learning Skills Partnership, has launched a course to introduce new talent into the automotive industry and enhance its offering.

Amy Swingler, from Trench, accepted the new customer host role and will begin a six month intensive training programme, resulting in a NVQ Level 2 customer service qualification.

The 18-year-old successfully completed an assessment day which included group exercises and an individual presentation in front of a panel of Inchcape managers and representatives from the Learning Skills Partnership, in addition to a one-to-one interview.

Speaking of her appointment, Amy added: “I had recently completed my A-levels and decided an apprenticeship would be the ideally opportunity to start building my business skills. The interview process was very nerve wracking but I am delighted to have secured the position.”

The dedicated role was launched following customers feedback. The training programme covers all customer facing skills including body language and problem solving plus in-depth product knowledge.

Volkswagen passenger cars is carrying out a pilot scheme with the Learning Skills Partnership across a number of sites in the UK as course co-ordinator, Lee Wilks explains.

He said: “The on-going pilot scheme has shown promise and will be fully assessed in the near future. We hope the government-funded programme will continue and introduce further customer host roles across the Volkswagen network.”

Austin knocks Wrathall off top spot for HiQ champagne moment win

There’s no doubt who fans of the Dunlop British Touring Car Championship were most impressed with at Rockingham, judging by Rob Austin’s landslide HiQ Champagne Moment victory.

A whopping 46 per-cent of supporters voted for the Worcestershire speedster to scoop the bubbly, in the biggest margin recorded by HiQ all season.

Rob claimed the fastest overall lap in his Audi A4 in the second practice of the day, pre-empting a 2^nd place podium in race three at the Northamptonshire circuit.

Winning fan Gerry Barclay praised Rob for his ‘tenacious driving’ and his ability to storm up the grid in qualifying and in races two and three.

Not surprisingly, Frank Wrathall – winner of the last two HiQ champagne moments - took second place with 29 per cent of the vote, and James Nash was third with 14 per cent.

Gerry has won the opportunity to present Rob with champagne at the penultimate round of the season, Brands Hatch this weekend.

Alister Stones, who works at Gilbert Lawton Volkswagen on Manchester Road, has chalked up 20 years in the motor industry, most of which have been with Volkswagen.

The 42-year-old (above) originally trained as a joiner and then financial advisor, before he took up a sales role in the automotive industry working alongside his mum. He is now the brand manager at Gilbert Lawton Volkswagen.

A young car enthusiast from Norton Fitzwarren has secured his dream job thanks to a successful work placement with a Taunton business.

Daniel Neal made such a good impression whilst undertaking voluntary work experience at Volkswagen Taunton Van Centre, that he has gone on to be appointed in a full-time position with the company.

The 21-year-old has been appointed as a sales executive at the van centre’s sister car retailer in Bridgwater.

He worked for two days a week over two years while studying for a diploma in mechanics and is understandably delighted with his new role.

Daniel said: “I set up my own work experience at the van centre because I wanted to gain first hand industry knowledge.
“Whilst working at the van centre I discovered a keen interest in the sales side of the business.”

Daniel’s story demonstrated what hard work and education can lead to; after he was made redundant from a role he has been in since leaving school.

He added: “I decided to use the opportunity to further my education and develop my skills in the motor industry, by studying for a diploma in mechanics at Somerset College of Arts and Technology.

“After two years of studying at college and the van centre I’ve now landed my dream job.

“I am very grateful to both Bridgwater Volkswagen and Taunton Van Centre for the opportunities and support which they have shown me.

“I am passionate about the Volkswagen brand and I want to go as far in my career as I can.”

In his new role as sales executive Daniel will undertake a 15 month Volkswagen training programme which will provide in-depth product and technology knowledge, and business experience.

Three years of hard work and training have paid off for Gee Cross' James Kidd after he graduated from his technician apprenticeship.

The 20-year-old joined Smith Knight Fay Volkswagen in Hyde from school, joining the Volkswagen apprenticeship programme to start his career in the automotive industry.

Smith Knight Fay’s brand manager, Thomas Koutsavakis, said: “James has worked exceptionally hard during his apprenticeship to become a skilful service technician; he will be a brilliant asset to the team.”

A senior manager from Oldham is celebrating becoming the first in the country to graduate from a new two-year management training course.

Jason Chisnall, brand manager at Smith Knight Fay Volkswagen in Oldham, recently completed the course launched by Volkswagen UK’s training academy to retain the top talent in the industry.

It completes a double celebration for Jason (below), as he marks 20 years in the motor industry late this year.

The 40-year-old’s career has see him work his way up to the very top, after he began as a petrol pump attendant in 1991.

Since then Jason has progressed as a sales executive, business manager, sales manager and now brand manager.

He said: “I am delighted to be one of the first to complete the course and impressed by how much knowledge I’ve gained.

“Support from colleagues at Smith Knight Fay Volkswagen has helped enormously and given me the time to study for this course.

“The qualification has given me extra information and experience to ensure customers are provided with the service they need from all staff.”

Jason had to pass tough exams in law, customer service, product knowledge, coaching and recruitment to gain the NVQ Level 4 equivalent qualification.

The culmination of the course, which was assessed by exams and interviews, was a three month project which was presented to a panel of Volkswagen directors.

Jason is one of only thirty graduates from the Volkswagen scheme in the UK.

Tyre industry expert invests £45,000 in new garage

A former high speed tyre tester has put his product knowledge into practice, after turning his attention to fast fit and opening a garage in Frome.

Chris Davison, 33, from Bath has invested £45,000 into a new business venture with HiQ, after 15 years working in tyre design technology with companies including Goodyear Dunlop.

Chris’ experience in test driving tyres put him in the perfect position to join the growing network of HiQ franchisees and impart his knowledge on customers needing tyre repair or replacement.

“Over the years, I have gained a lot of industry experience and knowledge around tyres and more generally, the motor trade, Chris explained.

MAYOR FUELS CASE FOR LPG

The Mayor of Hayle, Councillor John Bennett, welcomed the availability of LPG to the far south west, when he attended the Autogas expert motoring roadshow last week.

Councillor Bennett officially opened the LPG refuelling pump on the forecourt of the Shell site in Hayle, making the cost effective, environmentally beneficial fuel available to residents of south west Cornwall.

Speaking at the event Councillor Bennett said: “Fuel costs in rural areas are a key issue and anything that can help local residents save money on fuel must be welcomed.

“The availability of LPG on this site is not only good for local Hayle residents, but also good for the county and for holiday makers. It was reassuring to see how many people were filling up their vehicles with LPG meaning many motorists in our area are not only saving money, but also reducing the harmful impact they have on the environment. And it is also encouraging to see that Shell is willing to build on its investment in Hayle.”

To celebrate the availability of LPG, Autogas hosted an expert motoring roadshow on the Shell site, inviting Sunday Times motoring journalist and TV car expert Jason Dawe to share his fuel-efficiency tips with Shell customers helping them to make the fuel in their tank go further.

Jason says: “Recent headlines showing increases in domestic fuel costs have made everyone think about how much they are spending, so if you can cut your fuel bills by up to 40 per cent it sounds like a great idea.

“Autogas LPG is a UK produced fuel that is widely available to UK drivers. It produces around 20 per cent less C02 than a car running on petrol and significantly less particulate matter and NOx than a standard diesel engine.”

Autogas and Jason Dawe were joined at the roadshow by representatives from leading fast fit retail experts HiQ, who offered free tyre safety checks, as well as Mazda, which has recently made a commitment to support vehicles running on LPG.

A West Cumbrian technician is celebrating reaching the top of his profession after qualifying from a national programme.

Joseph Hyslop recently gained his master technician status after working his way through the Volkswagen Academy training programme.

The 60-year-old is one of the most experienced technicians in the UK and has spent all his working life in the motor industry, 33 of which have been at Walkingshaw Volkswagen in Workington.

Now one of the UK’s top Volkswagen technicians, he will pass on his 44 years’ of experience to the Lillyhall site’s apprentice technicians.

He said: “I am over the moon to I have reached the top of my profession and it’s extremely rewarding to know I can now pass on my knowledge and experience to the next generation of technicians.

“I’m very grateful to Walkingshaw Volkswagen for giving me the chance to prove my worth, believing in me and for investing in my training.”

Wednesbury workers this week stepped up to the oche to throw some arrows with World number three darts player James Wade to help a local charitable cause.

Sales people from MSC/J&L on Pacific Avenue in Wednesbury took a break from normal day to day business to play darts with current Premier League darts player, James Wade, at their head office on Wednesday.

WD-40 Multi-Use product, one of James Wade’s main sponsors, invited him to the industrial supplier to meet the team and challenge them to an exciting darts competition.
Staff at the site played James Wade in a 9-darts competition and key staff were thanked by WD-40 Company for their excellent sales figures across their newly launched Blue Works brand, with gift vouchers as a reward for their hard work.

James‘s appearance will also benefit a worthwhile cause. A professional dart board has been donated and signed by the world number three and presented to staff at MSC/J&L, who have chosen to raffle it, in house, to raise money for a local boy suffering with a terminal illness.

THE FORD COLLECTION EXHIBITS OUTSIDE LONDON

The exquisite Ford Collection has left its London residence for a rare and exclusive exhibition in the Midlands.

The Granary Art Gallery at Weston Park on the Shropshire Staffordshire border will display the private works-of-art, which were bestowed and nurtured by the late Sir Brinsley Ford, a distinguished connoisseur and former chairman of the Art Fund.

The collection, which is on loan from the Ford family to the stately home’s art gallery from Saturday 2nd April through to Sunday 3rd July, features works by the eighteenth century landscape artist Richard Wilson alongside architectural fantasies by Giovanni Paolo Panini and portraits by Augustus John.

The origins of the collection lie with the family’s ancestor, Benjamin Booth, whose indulgence and love of art was born through his marriage to wealthy Shropshire heiress, Jane Salwey. The collection then passed to the Ford family through marriage.

The late Sir Brinsley Ford took great pride in the stewardship of the family inheritance by sharing it with others. He passionately cultivated the collection studying its historical influences, such as, the Grand Tour, where young gentlemen travelled Europe to complete their education.

Gareth Williams, curator to the Weston Park Foundation, said: “We are especially grateful to the Ford family for their generosity in lending a part of their family collection to the Granary Art Gallery.

“Their collection contains some of the very finest works by Richard Wilson and artists connected with the Grand Tour.

“It is an immense honour for the Weston Park Foundation to be hosting this outstanding collection as well as a fabulous opportunity for visitors to the gallery to see a remarkable and rare group of paintings,” concluded Gareth.

Sir Brinsley Ford was unstinting in his devotion to art causes, ranging from the National Gallery, the Society of Dilettanti, the National Trust Foundation for Art and the Art Fund.

Talented artists from across the UK are invited to enter an open art competition organised by a Midlands stately home and sponsored by a leading fine art auction house.

The Granary Art Gallery at Weston Park, on the Staffordshire Shropshire border famous for hosting royalty and world leaders, has joined forces with Halls to launch a Fine Art Open Competition.

The winning artist will receive a prize of £2,000 and will also see their work of art featured in the Weston Park Granary Art Gallery’s August exhibition. In addition to the national prize, a regional prize of £500 will be awarded to entries from the Staffordshire and Shropshire area.

A third ‘junior’ category is open to budding artists under the age of 18 with the chance to win a selection of fine art equipment.

The recent sponsorship strengthens the auction house’s partnership with Weston Park as Halls will continue to hold regular fine art advisory days at the stately home. Experts are available throughout these events to give visitors free appraisals on fine and decorative art, jewellery and collectibles.

EXPLORING THE BEAUTY OF RHODODENDRONS

Gardening enthusiasts can embrace the colourful spectacle and scent of Rhododendrons during a series of evening walks at a Midlands stately home.

Weston Park, the former ancestral home to the Earls of Bradford, is opening sections of its woodland on Thursday 12th, Saturday 14th and Thursday 19th May for exclusive guided walks along its Rhododendron and Azalea lined pathways.

Introduced to the Weston Park estate by the Victorians it was a further 60 years later in the early 20th century, that the 4th Countess of Bradford expanded the floral collection with more fashionable hybrids. The shrubs were aimed at creating a riot of colour and fragrance designed at impressing visitors.

The guided walks commence at 6.30pm capturing the intense aroma and rich colours of purple, mauves, reds and pinks.

Weston Park’s Head Gardener Martin Gee said: “Early evening is the ideal time to witness the impressive beauty of this ‘king of the shrubs’.

A Timperley sales manager is celebrating becoming one of the first in the UK to graduate from a new two year management training programme.

Steve Jones, who works at Gilbert Lawton Volkswagen in Altrincham, recently completed the course launched by Volkswagen’s training academy to retain some of the top talent in the industry.

The 41-¬year-old has almost 25 years’ experience in the automotive industry and graduated with one of the top marks in the country.

He said: “I am delighted to be one of the first people to complete the course and impressed at getting one of the top overall marks.

“The qualification has given me extra knowledge and experience to ensure customers are provided with the service they need from all staff.”

Steve was marked on three sections, role play, interview and 100 question exam to gain the NVQ Level 4 equivalent qualification.

A new management team at a Huddersfield retailer has made an instant impact, after early 2011 customer satisfaction figures were published.

Huddersfield Volkswagen appointed four new sales and business centre managers in late 2010 to mark a new era for the Leeds Road site.

In a successful start to the year, the showroom received praise for its improved customer service, which was monitored through mystery shopper reports and customer satisfaction surveys.

John Booth will head up the team at the Corporation Road site after specialising as a business manager with the brand for the past eight years.

The 41-year-old from Newport began his career in the banking sector as a Lloyds TSB retail branch manager. After 13 years, John turned his financial expertise and managerial skills to the automotive industry, where he held business manager roles with various leading brands.

NEW SPONSORS HELP KEY CYCLING EVENT

One of the country’s most important youth track cycling competitions is going ahead after it secured sponsorship from a national brand.

The British Cycling National Tandem Sprint Championship and Newcastle-under-Lyme round of the Northern Area Youth Omnium series, will be sponsored by 3-IN-ONE, the longest established brand in the UK’s lubricants market.

In previous years this meeting has seen the likes of gold medal winning Olympians Victoria Pendleton and Jason Kenny compete, and this year future British Olympians race could be in action.

The 2011 event, on Sunday 22nd May at the Lyme Valley stadium, will form part of the British Paralympian cyclists’ training programme for next year, with Beijing gold medallists, Barney Storey and Anthony Kappes racing.

It offers a great chance of local riders to follow in the tyre tracks of Newcastle-under-Lyme rider, Kian Emadi (18), who has been talent spotted in previous youth omnium races and is hoping to make the Olympic squad for the 2016 games in Brazil.

A woman from Colchester has been recognised for her outstanding customer service with a national award.

Hayley Seear, from Blackheath, who works at Inchcape Volkswagen in Colchester, received a gold accolade in Inchcape’s annual ‘Leading Lights’ awards.

Over three thousand people across the company’s UK businesses are nominated annually for a ‘Leading Lights’ award, but only 40 are recognised to a gold standard.

A young car enthusiast from Macclesfield has embarked on three-year with the aim of becoming the best in the business.

Nineteen-year-old Matthew Wordsworth has been accepted by Macclesfield’s Volkswagen retailer, Gilbert Lawton, to be the latest recruit on the technician apprenticeship scheme.

Over the next three years Gilbert Lawton Volkswagen will invest nearly £40,000 to train Matthew through to technician status.

Matthew has joined after completing ‘A’ levels at college, and is looking forward to achieving his ambition of working on Volkswagen vehicles.

He said: “I love all types of vehicles and this is the only job I have ever wanted to do. I am passionate about the Volkswagen brand and I want to go as far in my career as I can.
